MarkaVIP Secures $10 Million As The Middle East Takes Off

Screen Shot 2012-04-25 at 15.57.20Online private sales burst onto the scene a few years ago in the shape of Vente Privee in Europe and, later, Gilt in the US. It's a model we all know and love - and it's rapidly proving a model with which emerging economies are, well, rather obsessed. I was just recently in Istanbul where you can almost throw a stone and be sure of hiting a private sales startup entrepreneur. And from there, and across the Middle East and North Africa (known as MENA), online businesses are growing like weeds. And some investors know it. Thus today MarkaVIP, a runaway private sales success story in the Middle East has completed a $10 million Series B funding led by European venture firm Prime Ventures. It's joined by participation from New York City-based Invus Financial Advisors (IFA), Antwerp-based Hummingbird Ventures, and San Francisco-based Lumia Capital.

iCloud Has Over 125 Million Users, Says Apple CFO Oppenheimer

icloud_heroWell, that was fast. Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer just announced on Apple's Q2 2012 earnings call that the company's iCloud service has attracted 125 million users in the roughly six months since the service launched. It seems like just yesterday that Oppenheimer revealed that the service had 85 million users, and the service's subscriber base continues to grow at a seemingly steady pace.

President Obama, Jimmy Fallon Slow Jam the News

President Barack Obama appeared on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon early this morning, taking part in the show's running bit called "slow jamming the news."

If you haven't seen it, the segment's name speaks for itself.

In front of a live college audience at the University of North Carolina, Obama talked about student loans while Fallon's house band the Roots jammed on a slow, sensual R&B beat, making the topic seem sexier than you ever thought possible:

With the rhythmic tunes accompanying him, Obama said, "What we said is simple: Now is not the time to make school more expensive for our young people."

Fallon then added (in his best Barry White voice), "Awww, yeah. You should listen to the president. Or as I like to call him, the Preezy of the United Steezy."

"Things are heating up inside Congress' chambers behind those closed doors."

We don't even know what that means, but the "POTUS with the most-est" needs to bring the Roots with him and deliver campaign speeches this way more often.

Mitt Romney wouldn't stand a chance.

Sprint reports Q1 2012 results: 1.5 million iPhone sales but a $255 million operating loss

Sprint reports Q1 2012 financials, 1.5 million iPhone sales but a $255 million loss

Sprint Nextel has just deployed its Q1 2012 financials and it's a bit of a mixed bag, with a five percent net revenue growth over this time last year and a whopping 1.5 million sales of that iPhone it paid so dearly for -- twice as many as it sold last quarter and, of those, 44 percent were new subscribers. That helped to drive an overall postpaid subscriber growth of 263,000 but, despite some good news, the company is still suffering a $255 million operating loss and a $863 million net loss. Sprint reaffirmed its LTE plans, a pilot launch of six cities sometime in the middle of this year, with 12,000 sites going online before 2012 turns a year older. Will it be enough? Tune in next quarter to find out.
