Djokovic has that unbeatable feeling (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Novak Djokovic has that unbeatable feeling.

And well he should.

The Serb outlasted Rafael Nadal to defend his Australian Open title in the longest ever Grand Slam final and become the fifth man to win three straight majors in the Open Era.

Djokovic now has the French Open ? the one major to elude him ? in his sights. He won't even rule out the ultimate: the Grand Slam.

"One player (Rod Laver) has done it, so it is possible," he said after the traditional post-victory photo shoot in a downtown Melbourne park on Monday. "Obviously the times are different and tennis nowadays is much more competitive and much more physical. And that makes that challenge more difficult to achieve. But everything is possible."

With the London Olympics to follow Wimbledon this year, Djokovic could even make it a Golden Slam by winning the gold medal at London 2012 to go with the four majors.

"The facts are that I'm at the peak of my career," Djokovic said. "I feel physically and mentally at the peak, I feel strong, I feel motivated, I feel eager to win more trophies."

Having slept for only a few hours, Djokovic dispensed with the band and the raucous dressing room celebrations that marked his victory last year, choosing to strum the air guitar and belt out a few lyrics from "Highway To Hell."

Djokovic recalled the brief celebrations after the match at Rod Laver Arena and made a half-hearted attempt to sing the refrain from the AC/DC rock anthem. His legs were too tired, and his throat a bit hoarse. "Oh man, I'm tired."

And so he should be. Djokovic completed a 5-hour, 53-minute 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 victory over Nadal at 1:37 a.m. ? ending an epic match with a forehand winner that finally finished off the Spaniard.

He defied exhaustion to tear off his shirt and flex his bare torso as he made his way to celebrate with friends and family. He was still doing interviews after 4 a.m.

It didn't leave much time for celebrating. Unlike his victory at the 2011 Australian Open, when he beat his friend Andy Murray in straight sets and then kicked off an all-night party with a rock band in the locker room.

"I didn't have any more energy left to celebrate," Djokovic said Monday. "I was preferring my bed."

When he awoke not long after, his body reminded him not just of the incredible events of the previous evening, nearly six hours of physically punishing tennis against one of the game's most ferociously competitive athletes, but also of a near five-hour semifinal two nights earlier against Murray.

"I felt lots of pain all over the body," he said. "The adrenaline is still there and I still am very excited about what I have experienced here in the last two weeks and especially last night. I'm full of joy, but I think still I don't have a real sense of what's going on."

Djokovic wasn't the only one feeling a little dazed Monday. There were still 1.86 million people watching in Australia until after 1:30 a.m. The peak audience was 3.86 million, approaching about one-fifth of the population. When the last ball was struck, hardly any of the almost 15,000 spectators in Rod Laver Arena had left.

A historic final provided a fitting climax to a men's tournament that also featured riveting semifinals between Nadal and No. 3-ranked Roger Federer, and Djokovic and No. 4 Murray.

Tournament director Craig Tiley, celebrating a record attendance of 686,006 over two weeks, described the final as "the greatest match of all time."

A day after earning her first Grand Slam title, even Victoria Azarenka came out to watch the men's final. The 22-year-old Belarusian needed 82 minutes ? two minutes more than the first set lasted between Nadal and Djokovic ? to rout Maria Sharapova and claim both the trophy and the No. 1 ranking.

Djokovic's seventh straight win in a final over Nadal underlined his dominance of the men's game, which until last year had been headlined by Nadal and Federer.

Nadal got closer to ending the Serb's recent success against him, but after being a break up in the fifth set, couldn't get over the line. Despite a third straight loss in a Grand Slam final, Nadal leaves Melbourne more motivated than ever.

Less than 24 hours before the tournament began, he was in tears, believing a freak knee injury he sustained while sitting on a chair would prevent him from competing in the tournament.

To end it having pushed his nemesis to the limit was more than enough consolation for the 10-time Grand Slam champion.

"I wanted to win, but I am happy about how I did," he said. "I had my chances against the best player of the world today. I played one against one."

In the end, Djokovic's unshakable belief that began to develop when he won the Davis Cup with Serbia at the end of 2010, and strengthened when he went the first 41 matches of last season unbeaten, pulled him through.

Once the bridesmaid to Nadal and Federer, Djokovic understood exactly how his opponent felt.

"When I played three, four years ago against Rafa and Roger in Grand Slam semifinals and finals, I felt that they were just superior on the court, that they had this mental advantage," he said. "Because they just know that when the time comes, when the match is breaking down, fifth set, they will always prevail, because they believe more, they have more experience and they know what to do."

Now it's Djokovic's turn to feel like he's the one who can't lose.

Will Florida Laws Keep Young Voters From Primary?

MTV News takes a closer look at legislation passed last year in the state that has voter-registration groups up in arms.

TAMPA, Florida — It's a teenage rite of passage up there with learning to drive and attending prom: your first time voting. But according to some longtime voter-registration organizations, that right could be threatened this year in a number of states due to new laws that make signing up new voters more difficult.

The issue has come into sharp relief this week in Florida, which holds its presidential primary Tuesday. A bill passed last year in the state includes a number of new rules for how civic organizations can register new voters, as well as ones that reduce the number of early voting days from 14 to eight and prohibit early voting on the Sunday before an election.

The part of the new law that has troubled groups such as Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters the most, though, is the one that forces such third-party organizations to submit voter-registration applications within 48 hours of receiving them, instead of the 10 days as provided by the pervious law. These groups — which are among several who have suspended their voter-registration drives in Florida this year because of a lawsuit over the changes — say the fines and threats of potential civil lawsuits have put a chill on their get-out-the-vote efforts.

"We are outraged at these new laws that will prevent opportunities for youth civic participation," Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit in early December. Attorneys for the groups claim Florida's new voter laws violate the U.S. Constitution and federal laws by violating their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association and failing to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with the laws' "confusing and unclear mandates." They also argue that the laws breach the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, a federal law designed in part to "encourage community-based voter-registration activity."

Supporters of the law say it will save money by eliminating extra voting days and is a bulwark against voter fraud, which its supporters argue is a constant threat to the democratic process.

Some Democrats, however, have accused Republicans — Florida is among the half-dozen states with GOP-led legislatures that passed new voting laws last year — of using the provisions to disenfranchise some traditionally key Democratic voting blocs, including racial minorities, the poor, the young and elderly voters.

There were 31 cases of voter fraud referred to Florida authorities between January 2008 and 2011, and only two resulted in arrests out of the 8.1 million votes cast in the 2008 election.

A hearing was held in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, led by U.S. Senators Bill Nelson of Florida and Dick Durbin of Illinois, in which the men described the bill as a "voter suppression act" and vowed to have the courts address what Durbin sees as a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

UK Greenlights first marine-energy park in the heart of Brunel-country

The West Country is home to some of the finest engineering anywhere in the UK, thanks to the region's historical patronage of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. That reputation will continue thanks to the Department of Energy and Climate Change naming it as the home of the nation's first marine energy park. Running from Bristol, past Cornwall and out to the Isles of Scilly, the tidal-power plant is expected to generate 27 Gigawatts of power, the equivalent of eight coal-fired power stations. Of course, harnessing the energy of the seas isn't something we'll be seeing soon as the project's earmarked to be ready for 2050, around the same time we're likely to get LTE.

Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, More React To Oscar Nominations

Oldman calls Best Actor nod 'extremely humbling, gratifying and delightful.'

Once again, the announcement of the Academy Awards nominations has made for a flurry of exciting headlines and news stories and lots of bets won and lost in Vegas.

In addition to the early-morning reveal of the full list of Oscar-nominated individuals and films, the most exciting aspect of Oscar nomination day is the universal delight and happiness expressed by the lucky folks in question.

Celebrated thespian and first-time nominee Gary Oldman was humbled by his Best Actor nomination for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy."

"This afternoon in Berlin I have learned that I was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Actor," he said in a statement. "You may have heard this before, but it has never been truer than it is for me today, it is extremely humbling, gratifying and delightful to have your work recognized by the Academy, and to join the celebrated ranks of previous nominees and colleagues. Amazing."

Another first-time nominee in the Best Actor category is Demián Bichir, star of the lesser-known but well-received "A Better Life," who admitted to being completely overwhelmed at having his name read along with Oldman's and the other "incredible" Best Actor nominees.

"This could have never happened if Chris Weitz had not been the head of this film," Bichir said in a statement. "He is my brother and I thank him deeply. Hopefully more and more people will jump into iTunes and Netflix to see our film. That will be the biggest reward we could get. I dedicate this nomination to those eleven million human beings who make our lives easier and better in the U.S."

Five-time nominee Kenneth Branagh was "absolutely thrilled" to learn of his first-ever Best Supporting Actor nod for "My Week With Marilyn."

"It was a rare honour to play Sir Laurence Olivier," Branagh said in a statement. "To be recognised by the Academy for doing so is overwhelming. I'm absolutely thrilled."

Branagh's fellow Best Supporting Actor nominee Christopher Plummer was also thrilled with the news.

"It's a shot in the arm for a young kid of 82 to receive an Academy Award nomination this morning," Plummer said in a statement. "My gratitude to writer/director Michael Mills, the Academy and to everyone involved with 'Beginners.' "

Best Director nominee Michel Hazanavicius and Best Supporting Actress nominee Bérénice Bejo were expectedly over the moon about their film "The Artist" receiving 10 nominations overall.

"I am so honored for this nomination," Hazanavicius said in a statement. "Filming 'The Artist' in Los Angeles was a dream come true, and to receive this recognition today is far beyond what I ever imagined. I couldn't have done this film without the incredible cast of actors and outstanding crew whose heart and souls were poured into this project."

"I'm overjoyed and filled with happiness," Bejo said. "I can't believe that a year ago I was learning how to tap dance and today I am nominated for an Academy Award. It was a thrill to work on a project as ambitious as 'The Artist' and I am happy to share this moment with our visionary director, Michel Hazanavicius."

And last but certainly not least is a reaction from Hollywood's most awarded and nominated individual, Meryl Streep.

"I am honored to be in company with such beautiful artists," the 17-time Oscar nominee said in a statement. "And touched deeply by my fellow actors for their generosity in giving me this acknowledgment."

(AP) ? Police say a driver coming to a stop at a Massachusetts office parking lot stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the car to jump over a curb and land inside a nearby parking garage on top of a luxury sedan.

Lt. Marie Cleary says no one was injured in the Thursday morning crash in Wellesley, just west of Boston. The sedan in the parking garage was empty.

Police have cited the driver for failure to use care when stopping. Officers can't explain how he got out of his car while it was perched on top of the other vehicle.

Sony Bloggie Live review

Last April, Cisco unceremoniously shuttered Flip, two years after purchasing the company for $590 million. The end of the line came as a bit of a shock, marking the death of the brand that had become synonymous with pocket cams. But did it also mark the end of the miniature camcorder, in a world where more and more people carry portable cameras on them at all times, in the form of smartphones?

In spite of Cisco's lack of faith in the market for budget standalone camcorders, a number of companies such as Kodak and Samsung have carried on. Most notable among them, though, might be Sony, which has continued to innovate with its Bloggie line. The company's latest offering, the Bloggie Live adds WiFi to the equation, for wireless file transfers and, as the name not-so-subtly implies, live-streaming. But are these features enough to keep buyers interested in pocket camcorders, or is this too little, too late in a world where video-capturing smartphones are the norm?

Nationwide strike begins in Nigeria over gas costs (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A national strike paralyzed much of Nigeria on Monday, with more than 10,000 demonstrators swarming its commercial capital to protest soaring fuel prices and decades of government corruption in the oil-rich country.

Some protesters pulled metal barriers into the street, while others took gasoline from motorbikes to set tires ablaze. Others waved placards bearing an effigy of President Goodluck Jonathan with devil horns and fanged teeth, and showing him pumping fuel at a gas station.

"Our leaders are not concerned about Nigerians. They are concerned about themselves," said protester Joseph Adekolu, a 42-year-old accountant.

Police carrying Kalashnikov rifles and gas masks largely stood by as the demonstrators marched on the first day of an indefinite strike called by labor unions. Protesters also took to the streets in Nigeria's capital of Abuja.

Gas prices have risen from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter) since a government fuel subsidy ended on Jan. 1 at the orders of Jonathan's administration. That spurred a spike in prices for food and transportation across a nation of more than 160 million people, most of whom live on less than $2 a day.

While lawmakers on Sunday rebuked the president's decision, the unions said they would continue their strike.

Bola Adejobi, 53, said she's protesting against more than just fuel costs. For her and many others in Africa's most populous country, the strike represents anger that much of the nation remains without electricity and clean drinking water after more than 50 years of oil production.

"It is high time to take Nigeria into our hands," Adejobi said. "It happened in Egypt. It happened in Libya."

Nigeria's finance minister said the country has been using borrowed funds to maintain the subsidy.

"Greece got where it is now because for years, they didn't do the right thing. They kept borrowing and borrowing to finance development," Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told local television station Channels TV on Monday. "We can't keep borrowing to finance our development."

Two major unions have said they will maintain the strike despite a court restraining order. A similar situation occurred in 2003, when strikers over eight days attacked shops that remained open, took over air traffic control towers and caused a drop in oil production in a country vital to U.S. energy supplies.

Organizers have called for peaceful protests, but gang members already began stoning vehicles and harassing motorists in Lagos. Some riot police stood on hand at the demonstration site Monday. They quickly became outnumbered by protesters.

The strikes comes as activists have begun a loose-knit group of protests called "Occupy Nigeria," inspired by those near Wall Street in New York. Their anger extends to the government's weak response to ongoing violence in Nigeria by a radical Muslim sect that, according to an Associated Press count, killed at least 510 people last year.

Famous Nigerian authors, including Chinua Achebe, issued a statement Monday saying they support the strike, and warning that if left unattended the violence by the extremist group could sweep the country.

"The country's leadership should not view the incessant attacks as mere temporary misfortune with which the citizenry must learn to live; they are precursors to events that could destabilize the entire country," their statement read.

The government has so fair failed to calm public anger over the spiraling gasoline costs. The government has promised that the $8 billion in estimated savings a year from the end of the fuel subsidies would go toward badly needed road and public projects.

One protester in Lagos held his protest sign upside down.

"Our life is already turned upside down," he told a reporter. "It is not how it's supposed to be."

Demonstrators burned a patrol car and a private car parked next to it in the northern city of Kano, filling the sky with billows of smoke as thousands protested below. Some in Nigeria's second-largest city are asking for the government to restore the subsidy. Others want Jonathan to resign. "He cannot rule this country," a placard read.

Some protesters also brought down a fence to the seat of the state of government in Kano where security officers used tear gas and fired at the crowd to keep them from entering the premises.

Eighteen people were wounded in the shootings and stampede that followed, said Dr. Kabiru Abdulsalam, spokesman for the Nigerian Medical Association of Kano.

NFL MVP: Brees vs Rodgers

I wanted to take a look at the stats comparing Brees and Rodgers. I wanted to look at the numbers of each quarterback, besides the obvious stats.

I created several tables.

Table 1 contained each quarterback's stats for yards, attempts, yards/attempt, completion percentage, touchdowns, interceptions, and QB rating

Table 2 contained each quarterback's stats for yards/game, attempts/game, touchdowns/game, and interceptions/game

Table 3: For the Table 3 I went through and counted the total number of drives each quarterback conducted, subtracting drives that involved taking a knee (or 3 plays and a knee) at the end of a half and drives led by Flynn or Daniels. I then put each quarterback's yards, attempts, touchdowns, and interceptions on a per drive basis.

Table 4 contained the numbers from Table 3 and calculated out to 150 drives. I chose 150 drives as the average season, so the numbers in that table show how each quarterback would differ from the other based on the performance from this season and an even number of drives for each quarterback.

Table 5 contained the average line of scrimmage (LOS) for each team and then showed how many more yards one quarterback had to work with over the course of a 150 possession season

Star-divide

Table 1: Each quarterback's stats for yards, attempts, yards/attempt, completion percentage, touchdowns, interceptions, QB rating

Originalstats_medium

Table 2: Each quarterback's stats for yards/game, attempts/game, touchdowns/game, and interceptions/game

Pergame_medium

Table 3: Total number of drives each quarterback conducted, subtracting drives that involved taking a knee (or 3 plays and a knee type situation) and drives led by Flynn or Daniels. I then put each quarterback's yards, attempts, touchdowns, and interceptions on a per drive basis. Drew Brees had 164 total possessions and Aaron Rodgers had 141 total possessions.

Perdrive_medium

Table 4: The numbers from Table 3 and calculated out to 150 drives. I chose 150 drives as the average season, so the numbers in that table show how each quarterback would differ from the other based on the performance from this season and an even number of drives for each quarterback.

Per150drives_medium

Table 5: The average line of scrimmage (LOS) for each team and then showed how many more yards Brees had to work with over the course of a 150 game season.

Lineofscrimmage_medium

Conclusion:

The plain stats would conclude that Brees had a significant number of more yards on many more attempts than Rodgers, 1 more touchdown, 7 more interceptions, a higher completion percentage, and a much lower QB rating. All of those numbers, despite the advantage of working with 23 more possessions than Rodgers.

However, when looking at the numbers on a per game basis, there isn't such a large gap. Then when looking at the numbers on a per drive basis, there is an even smaller gap. Brees throws for .4 more yards than Rodgers, on .45 more attempts, while throwing .04 less touchdowns than Rodgers, and .04 more interceptions than Rodgers. To put those numbers into something a little more understandable, I extrapolated those numbers out to what I considered an average season of 150 drives. Those results are the really telling numbers. If each QB had the same number of possessions, Brees would throw for only 69 more yards in an entire season, while throwing 67 more passes. Despite the obvious disadvantage of throwing the ball 67 less times, Rodgers would still throw 6 more touchdowns than Brees. Brees would also throw 5-6 more interceptions than Rodgers. Based on the 150 possession projections Brees would throw for 69 more yards over the course of the season, despite having 259.5 more yards to work with, due to the Packers 1.7 yards closer to the end zone average starting field position.

Oh yeah and because I saw a post on Canal Street Chronicles about how Rodgers QB rating is drastically inflated because the Packer defense creates so many turnovers that a lot of his touchdown passes actually came on much shorter drives, I went through every scoring drive of each quarterback's touchdown passes and found the average line of scrimmage for them.

Brees:31.95 yard line

Rodgers: 33.89 yard line

Drew Brees was placed at the huge disadvantage of traveling 1.94 yards every time he threw a touchdown pass, hardly a worth while point considering his average touchdown pass was 16.85 yards.

One more thing:

The Packers scored 56 touchdowns (rushing + passing) while Rodgers was quarterback on 141 possessions. While the Saints scored 62 touchdowns on 164 possessions under Drew Brees.

Than means that the Packers scored touchdowns on 39.7% of their possessions with Rodgers under center and the Saints scored touchdowns on 37.8% of their possessions with Brees under center. This isn't a huge discrepancy, it only equates to 2.85 more touchdowns for Rodgers on a 150 possession season, however that's another notch for Rodgers.

When looking at a per drive basis and making each player play with an equal number of drives, I don't see a single stat that Drew Brees is better than Rodgers in, especially because he would have averaged 69 more yards on 67 more attempts and 259.5 more yards to work with. Put another way, Brees averaged 1.4 yards per drive passing more than Rodgers, despite 1.7 more yards to work with.

Menendez denies judge block reports (Politico)

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) flatly rejected media reports Friday suggesting that he?s blocking one of President Barack Obama?s appellate court nominees because she?s in a relationship with a federal prosecutor who investigated the senator for corruption during his 2006 campaign.

?It is incredibly disappointing and unfortunate that my real concerns over the suitability of Judge Shwartz to serve a lifetime appointment as circuit court judge have been spun as some petty political vendetta by some of her supporters,? Menendez said in a statement to POLITICO.

?I did not believe it was appropriate, nor was it my intention, to debate Judge Shwartz?s qualifications to serve on the circuit court through the press, but the suppositions and suggestions assigned to my position are false and my concerns are substantive.?

Both The New York Times and The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported in front-page stories Friday that Menendez has stalled the nomination of Patty Shwartz for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, marking the first time one of Obama?s judicial picks had been blocked by a member of his own party.

Both papers reported that Shwartz?s companion of more than two decades is James Nobile, the head of the public corruption unit for New Jersey?s U.S. Attorney?s Office. Nobile, the Times reported has served both Democratic and Republican U.S. Attorneys, including Chris Christie, now the state?s popular GOP governor.

That unit launched a 2006 probe into Menendez?s ties to a nonprofit that rented space from him for nearly a decade, an investigation that Republicans used to bludgeon Menendez and that he suspected was politically driven. The case was closed last October with no charges ever filed.

?[T]he connection has led lawyers and judges in the state to speculate that Mr. Menendez is acting out of resentment, rather than any concern about Judge Shwartz?s qualifications,? The Times wrote.

In his statement, Menendez said it was ?completely untrue? that he would hold up a nominee because of an association with the U.S. Attorney?s Office, though he didn?t specifically mention Nobile. The senator pointed out that he?s backed several nominees who worked in that office, including Judge Michael Chagares, whom President George W. Bush nominated for the Third Circuit.

Menendez said he had supported the candidate the White House initially considered for the seat to which Shwartz was nominated, but that he didn?t know why that candidate was not ultimately picked. Menendez said he learned of Shwartz?s possible nomination to the Third Circuit only upon interviewing her for an opening on the U.S. District Court for New Jersey.

?I proceeded to ask her substantive legal questions and was not fully satisfied with her responses,? Menendez said. ?In my opinion, Judge Shwartz did not adequately demonstrate the breadth of knowledge of constitutional law and pivotal Supreme Court decisions such as Citizens United that we should expect from a United States Circuit Court judge.?

?In the interview with Judge Shwartz, in my opinion, she misapplied the application of strict scrutiny versus rational basis review to the questions at hand,? Menendez added. ?She did not express substantive knowledge as to the scope of the rights of corporations under the Constitution or jurisprudence on the constitutional limits of Executive Branch powers.

HP intros Omni 27 all-in-one, Pavilion HPE Phoenix h9 tower

If you thought HP would take a break after announcing seven all-in-ones last fall, you'd be sadly mistaken: the company just trotted out the Omni 27, its first model with a 27-inch display. In addition to that 1080p (non-touch) screen, it rocks the same Easel design as all those models HP introduced a few months back, which is to say it tilts a relatively modest 25 degrees. Other specs include dual- and quad-core Intel processors, up to 2TB of storage and Beats Audio (duh), and an optional TV tuner, Blu-ray player and HDMI port (yes, HDMI is an add-on). Moving on to a different category entirely, HP also unveiled the Pavilion HPE Phoenix h9 for the US market -- not its inaugural enthusiast tower, to be sure, but definitely the first to bear the consumer-y Pavilion name. Though the red accents and "armor-plated" design would suggest otherwise, HP's quick to market this not as a gaming rig, but a prosumer machine. Whatever you want to call it, you'll find specs worthy of power uses: a choice of Intel's latest X79 processors or AMD's eight-core chips, NVIDIA GTX 580 / AMD Radeon 7670 graphics and four DIMM slots capable of accommodating 16GB of RAM and up to three hard drives.

Whichever tickles your fancy, both come loaded with HP's Magic Canvas software -- aka, the UI that used to be called TouchSmart but has since been re-tooled to work even on non-touch machines. They'll each be available January 8th, with the Omni 27 starting at $1,200 and the Phoenix h9 fetching $1,150 and up. Until then, we've got a mix of hands-on and press shots below, with a pair of promo videos waiting for just past the break.
