Archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology of the Americas at the University of Bonn have been excavating for the past four years together with the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History in the Maya city of Uxul in Campeche, Mexico. The aim of the excavation project under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nikolai Grube and Dr. Kai Delvendahl is to investigate the process of centralization and collapse of hegemonic state structures in the Maya Lowlands using the example of a mid-sized classic Maya city (Uxul) and its ties to a supra-regional center (Calakmul). Research at Uxul, located close to the border with Guatemala, is being funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Since 2011, excavations have concentrated on the royal palace complex, which is located directly south of the main plazas in the center of Uxul. The palace extends 120 x 130 meters and consists of at least eleven individual buildings which surround five courtyards. "The palace complex was built around 650 AD, a time when the neighboring ruling dynasty from Calakmul was extending its influence over large areas of the Maya Lowlands," explains Professor Grube. In 2011, six sculpted panels were discovered during excavations of the southern stairway of the largest building of the group, Structure K2. Four of these panels depict kings from Calakmul, playing ball. The similarities in the layout of the centers of Calakmul and Uxul and especially of the main palace complexes in the two cities let the researchers to suggest that Uxul, originally a smaller independent kingdom, may have been temporarily ruled and inhabited by members of the Kaan Dynasty of Calakmul. Through recent excavations in several of Uxuls central buildings, the changes in the physiognomy of the citys center can be linked directly to the time of military and political expansion of the Kaan Dynasty during the reign of Yuknom Cheen II, in the first half of the 7th century. However, the influence subsided after 705 AD, and there is a strong likelihood that a local ruling family came back to power for a few generations. At the start of the 9th century, Uxul was almost completely abandoned.

Richly furnished tomb

"During this years excavation below one of the southern rooms of Structure K2, we have discovered a richly furnished tomb, which can be dated to the time right after the influence of Calakmul in Uxul had ended" explains Dr. Delvendahl. The walls of the crypt are made of rough stone and the chamber was covered with a corbel vault, typical for the Maya culture. In the interior of this tomb chamber which dates back about 1,300 years, the remains of a young man were discovered who was buried on his back with his arms folded. Deposited around him were four ceramic plates and five ceramic vases in an exceptionally preserved state, some of which were decorated with spectacular paintings and moldings. A unique plate, painted in the famed Codex-Style, was covering the skull of the deceased.

Vessel with dedication may point to the identity of the deceased

"On one of the vases, there was a simple dedication, written in elegantly molded hieroglyphics, which read: '[This is] the drinking vessel of the young man/prince'. Also a second molded vessel appears to mention a young man or prince" says Professor Grube. Although these references are not definite clues as to the identity of the departed, the location of the tomb and the absence of certain status markers, such as jade jewelry, would indicate that the deceased was a young male member of the ruling family who was not in direct line for the throne. A possible date on one of the vessels corresponds to the year 711 AD; therefore the death of the young prince and the construction of his tomb can be dated back to the second or third decade of the 8th century. The exceptionally preserved ceramics in particular make this tomb one of the most significant discoveries of its kind in the entire Maya Lowlands.

Student Loan Consolidation Guide | YodZiaN.CoM - Finance and ...

Student loans are loans that are offered to students to assist in payment of the costs of professional education. The government of the country offers these loans and at a very low rate of interest.

Student loans are a great help to students who plan to do further studies, in their own country or abroad, but lack the requisite funds to do that. In this way student loans not just assist the student but also his family.

Many institutes and universities offer student loan. There are different types of student loans. So there are several options available for students to choose from. Broadly there are two types of loans available: Federal loans and Private Educational Loans.

The students opting for Federal Students loan program are funded and administered initially through the US Department of Education?s Federal Student Aid Programs. These loans are the easiest to get student loan consolidation services. The Federal student loan programs disburse about $60 billion a year. Stafford loans are the most common form of federal loans for students.

Private student loans are administered by standard lending institutions. The most commonly opted loans in this are Sallie Mae Signature and the Citibank student loan. These organizations provide unsecured loans to a student and charge hefty interest on it.

A student can combine the private and the federal loans to gather funds for his further studies. However a student should bear in mind that these two loans should not be combined or consolidated. He should consolidate his federal loans first and then separately consolidate privately the student loan debt.

Student loan consolidation refers to building all your student loans into a single loan with one lender and one repayment plan. You can plan to consolidate your loan like refinancing a home mortgage. The time you consolidate your loan, the balances of your other current loans are paid off, with the total balance playing over into one consolidated loan. However at the end you will be left with just one student loan to pay off. The student loan can be consolidated by the student as well as his family i.e. parents.

There are several benefits of consolidating a student loan. For instance loan consolidation offers lower monthly payments, combining of your student loan payments into just a single monthly bill and the lock or the stoppage loan consolidation puts in a fixed, usually lower, interest rate for the term of your loan thereby saving thousands of dollars as per the interest rates of your original loan.

Moreover there is no fees, charges and other prepayment penalties after the loan is consolidated. The consolidated loan offers flexible repayment options. The loan consolidation can be done without any credit checks or co-signers.

The interest rate of your consolidated loan is calculated by averaging the interest rate of all the loans that are consolidated. The figure that so appears is rounded up to the next one-eighth of one percent and so the maximum interest rate comes out to be 8.25 percent.

Loan consolidation is a wonderful option if this lowers the interest rate of your current loans especially at the time you are confronting problems in making monthly payments. But if your current loan is about to end, consolidation is just not a wise idea.

Might Private Property, Chiefly Any Fuel Station, Become A Fantastic ...

Think about what type of commercial real estate you?re interested in before you begin investing. If you do not invest in the right real estate, you could end up losing a lot of money, and this is exactly why you should focus on the gas station and convenience store market. These tips below will help you make wise decisions when investing in commercial real estate.

See how your considered firm measure its results. Ask how they will make determinations regarding space requirements, property selection and other matters that are important to you. Knowing this before signing an agreement with them has many benefits.

This is necessary in order to confirm that the terms reflect the rent roll as well as the property?s documentation. If you fail to check out the terms, you might find something that is at odds with the rent roll and make the pro forma unreliable.

If you are viewing more than one property or possibly a great gas station for sale here and there, you may wish to create a checklist for each location. Accept the proposal responses during the first round, but before going further, notify all the property owners involved. There is nothing wrong with hinting that you have other properties in mind. It may help get you a better deal.

Make sure you consider any possible environmental problems. One huge concern is when the property you currently own has problems with hazardous waste materials. It?s up to you to be aware of the issues, fix them, and have them inspected once complete.

There are many websites available that offer information to investors; therefore, learn all you can before searching for commercial property. You can never learn too much about commercial real estate, so make it your aim to always keep adding to your store of knowledge about the subject.

When considering a piece of property, you must pay close attention to the surrounding area. In general, it?s better to locate a business in a richer area because rich customers obviously have more discretionary income. Yet, if you have a business that might thrive in a neighborhood where the not so well-off would opt to go to your business, then maybe that kind of neighborhood is for you.

Have an understanding on what exactly it is you are looking for when it comes to commercial real estate. You should write a list of which features are most important to you. For example, do you need a specific number of restrooms, a specific amount of square footage, or a conference room?

Hopefully with the tips that you just learned you can now feel more confident when it comes down to selling or buying commercial real estate. This collection was carefully constructed to help you begin to hone your buying or selling skills when it comes to commercial real estate.

Panetta heads to Mideast; Syria high on the agenda

(AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta began a five-day Mideast trip Sunday to consult with the new Islamist leaders of Tunisia and Egypt and to meet with long-standing allies Israel and Jordan.

High on the agenda at each stop is expected to be the accelerating crisis in Syria, which potentially has grave implications for Israel. The Jewish state fears the unrest will spill over the border and that the long-quiet Golan Heights, captured from Syria in 1967, will become a new Islamist front against Israel.

Syria has strong ties to Iran, Israel's most fearsome enemy, and to Palestinian and Lebanese militants who have warred with Israel. Jordan's worries include a potential refugee crisis on its border.

Panetta's press secretary, George Little, said the trip is intended to affirm a U.S. commitment to stability in the Middle East and North Africa at a time the U.S. military is shifting more of its attention to Asia.

"That will require strengthening traditional alliances with countries like Israel and Jordan and building strong partnerships with new democratic governments," Little said last week in previewing the trip.

Panetta will be in Jerusalem just days after a visit by U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who has been highly critical of President Barack Obama's approach to Israel.

Panetta is expected to highlight U.S. cooperation with Israel on building more effective missile defenses, including the Iron Dome system that is designed to shoot down short-range rockets and artillery shells. That air defense system was developed in response to Israel's 2006 war with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, who fired thousands of rockets, mostly short-range Katyushas, into northern Israel. The U.S. has provided $205 million for the project, and on Friday, Obama announced the release of a further $70 million.

In Tunis, Panetta plans to meet with his Tunisian counterpart as well as President Moncef Marzouki, leader of the small, secular Congress for the Republic party.

Panetta is scheduled to visit the North Africa American Cemetery near Tunis, resting place for 2,841 U.S. military members killed in the World War II invasion and occupation of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia in 1942-43. Among them is Army Air Corps pilot Foy Draper, who won a gold medal in the 1936 Summer Olympics as a member of the U.S. 400 meter relay team. He was killed on a mission over Tunisia in January 1943.

Man stops alleged iPhone thief, makes a video

By Marc Santia, WNBC

David Gray / REUTERS

Brian Hester was taking a smoke break on Barclay Street when he witnessed a man steal an iPhone straight out of a woman's hands Thursday.

Hester, a real estate broker and avid photographer, wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing, so he gave chase.

"All I was thinking was, 'Catch this guy,'" Hester said Friday.

Joined by other New Yorkers, Hester and the band of strangers caught up to the alleged thief on Broadway. They held him on the ground and Hester began taking video with his camera.

As they waited for police, the alleged thief decided to make a run for it, but Hester wasn't about to let him get away. He chased the man a second time and tackled the alleged crook right in the middle of Broadway.

Police came and arrested the man and the band of good Samaritans returned the iPhone to its owner.

Throughout the ordeal Hester continued to shoot video with his camera. He hopes that the video he took will serve as a warning to potential thiefs.

"I wanted to put the video out there to show anybody else who's thinking of coming to New York and snatching somebody's iPhone that you're not going to get away with that," said Hester.

NASA X-ray concept inspired from a roll of Scotch? tape

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? The inspiration behind NASA scientist Maxim Markevitch's quest to build a highly specialized X-ray mirror using a never-before-tried technique comes from an unusual source: a roll of Scotch? tape.

Markevitch and a team of X-ray optics experts at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., have begun investigating the feasibility of fashioning a low-cost mirror from plastic tape and tightly rolling it like the sticky adhesive commonly found in most homes and offices.

"I remember looking at a roll of Scotch tape and thinking, 'was it possible to use the same design for capturing hard X-rays,'" Markevitch recalled. "I talked with a few people, and to my surprise, they didn't see any principal reasons why it couldn't be done."

With funding from NASA's Center Innovation Fund, the team now is pursuing Markevitch's "early-stage" idea and has already begun testing candidate materials that could be fashioned into a rolled mirror capable of collecting X-rays -- in itself a challenging proposition. To capture these ever-elusive photons, the mirrors must be curved and nested inside a cylindrical optical assembly. The rounded geometry allows the high-energy light to graze their surfaces, much like a stone skimming the surface of a pond.

Motivating Markevitch is the fact that these highly specialized mirrors are time-consuming and expensive to build and assemble, despite efforts to dramatically reduce production costs. Making matters more demanding is the fact that X-ray observatories in the future likely will require much larger collecting areas, therefore requiring an even greater number of individual mirror segments that all must be nested, coated with layers of highly reflective materials, and perfectly coaligned inside their optical assemblies. "It's a lot of work fabricating these rigid shells and making sure they're properly aligned," he said.

The Science

The science Markevitch would like to pursue is one that would require a larger mirror. Over the past few decades, NASA has launched several X-ray observatories sensitive to lower-energy "soft X-rays," including the Chandra X-ray Observatory. They discovered and imaged the faint, diffuse X-ray signal from a variety of astrophysical sources dominated by thermal emission, such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Other missions, like NASA's Swift satellite, were sensitive to higher-energy gamma rays, but they lacked imaging capabilities.

"There remains a large and totally unexplored discovery space of faint, diffuse nonthermal astrophysical objects emitting at high X-ray energies," Markevitch said.

One class of objects waiting to be better understood is cosmic rays -- highly energetic subatomic particles generated in deep space -- that reside in galaxy clusters and other large-scale structure in the universe. Scientists believe that cosmic rays and the magnetic fields between galaxy clusters can alter the physics within galaxy clusters. A better understanding of these physics could reveal more about the birth and evolution of the cosmos, Markevitch said.

To study cosmic rays, however, observatories would have to be tuned to hard X-rays. Although NASA's recently launched Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Japan's New X-ray Telescope, also known as Astro-H, are sensitive to hard X-rays, Markevitch said they only "will graze the surface of this discovery space." Because the signal is so faint, only an imaging X-ray telescope with a collecting area 30 times larger than that of NuSTAR, working with current and future radio telescopes, could do the job, Markevitch said.

"However, to our knowledge, nothing of the kind is planned or even proposed in the U.S. or elsewhere because of the cost something like this presents," he said.

The only solution then is developing a new technology that would dramatically reduce the cost of building X-ray optics and increase the size of the light-collecting area. "If we can build a mirror that's big enough, this might be the way to go," he said.

Under his research plan, Markevitch, Takashi Okajima, Will Zhang, and Peter Serlemitsos are acquiring and testing candidate tape that would be coated on one side with a multilayer of reflective material and then wound into a roll, forming a large number of densely packed nested shells that are spaced by the varying thickness of the tape. "The collecting surface is automatic, it's rolled, self-supporting, and already aligned," Markevitch said. Multiple rolls then would be placed in an optical assembly, providing a much larger collecting area, or, in other words, a larger mirror.

"Maxim's Scotch tape idea is in an early stage," Zhang said. "In the next year, we will know whether it has a chance of working."

If it does, it could prove "game-changing for hard X-ray astronomy," Markevitch said. "It could significantly reduce the cost of building large mirrors, bringing within reach the possibility of building a mirror with 10 to 30 times greater effective area than current X-ray telescopes."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's first earnings report as a public company had solid numbers, but in the end it landed with a thud ? much like its rocky initial public offering two months ago.

Facebook reported stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers Thursday. But investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, its stock fell more than 10 percent, or $2.74, to $24.10 in after-hours trading. The decline means Facebook's stock will most likely open at its lowest level since going public.

It's another big disappointment for the Harvard-born company that was supposed to usher in the next Internet boom.

"They didn't break any banks," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer. "They did not come out any better than anybody had expected."

What may have rattled investors is that Facebook's revenue growth has slowed. Between 2009 and 2010, the company's revenue nearly tripled. In the first quarter of this year, revenue climbed 44 percent. In the second quarter, Facebook Inc.'s revenue increased 32 percent to $1.18 billion from $895 million a year earlier. Analysts, on average had expected slightly lower revenue of $1.16 billion, according to FactSet.

For a freshly public company such as Facebook, the decelerating revenue growth is a concern. A bet on fast-growing revenue is the reason investors are willing to value new companies highly even if they are not making a profit. Another reason jittery investors may be even more nervous: Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, the number of people who access Facebook regularly inched closer to 1 billion. The company said it had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year earlier. At the end of the first quarter, it had 901 million users.

Overall the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company posted a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share in the April-June period, mainly due to compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago. The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

The results come two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq stock market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Though Facebook had a lot riding on its first public report, Wall Street's outlook was muted, which could be another reason for the stock's decline.

"People are waiting for a really huge growth moment in revenue, advertising, dollars per user," said Alex Ashby, research analyst at Global X Funds, a provider of a social media exchange-traded fund. "People had expected that Facebook is going to revolutionize advertising...we think it's still a definite possibility, but maybe further down the road."

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ?even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Credit Counseling Compliance Requirements

Credit counseling agencies operate in a highly regulated environment, rife with daunting challenges to profitability and growth. ?In addition to proper management and customer service, one of the most important aspects of operating a successful credit counseling agency is to constantly review and update your compliance policies to ensure they?address every facet of your operations. ?Failure to do so may result in unwanted scrutiny from governmental agencies, including the newly established Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). An?effective compliance management system should address four key matters:

  • Board and management oversight;
  • Regulatory Compliance;
  • Response to consumer complaints; and
  • Compliance audits.

Compliance policies should be written down in a well-organized compliance manual, which is regularly updated on a consistent basis by a Compliance Management Officer (CMO). ?The CMO should conduct monthly compliance reviews to ensure that all policies are operating smoothly and effectively. ?Relevant aspects of your policies should be communicated to your staff and consumers. ?For example, intake agents should be well aware of their responsibilities with respect describing your service accurately and completely. ?Consumers should receive a written policy statement regarding the use of their personal financial information.

The manner in which your company advertises its services justifies special attention. ?Be certain that any statements regarding your company are truthful, not misleading, and substantiated, regardless of where and how they are made. ?This includes statements made over the telephone, on your website, and on social media platforms.

In addition, policies must be established to govern how your organization oversees the activities of third parties that operate on your company?s behalf. ?Federal agencies are increasingly holding principals legally responsible for the actions of their independent contractors. ?In other words, claiming to be unaware of how your marketing partners operate will not protect you from any violations.

Finally, be certain to pay attention to maintaining your tax-exempt status. ?The IRS has been carefully scrutinizing tax-exempt credit counseling agencies and has conducted 254 audits over the past few years.

North Korea flag blunder mars day one

London's Olympics got off to an embarrassing start Wednesday when North Korea's women footballers refused to play after a mix-up over their national flag, in one of a series of blunders.

Hosts Great Britain had kicked off the sports festival, years in the making and costing billions of dollars, with a 1-0 win over New Zealand as women's soccer got under way two days before the opening the ceremony.

The United States beat France 4-2 and Japan overcame Canada 2-1. But North Korea's opener against Colombia was held up after their players were pictured next to South Korea's flag on the big screen at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

The North Koreans were finally persuaded to take the field and the match, scheduled for 7:45 pm (1845 GMT), finally began at 8:50 pm. Red-faced organisers were quick to apologise for the howler.

"Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag," said a statement from London 2012 organisers.

"Clearly that is a mistake, we will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

The incident -- involving two countries still officially at war -- ensured a nightmare debut for the 19-day Games, where the hosts' capabilities are on show as thousands of athletes compete for 302 gold medals until August 12.

And it was not the only problem on Wednesday. Elsewhere, Team GB sent out an email referring to the Great Britain women's football team as "England".

And organisers had to offer a refund to diving fans whose view will be partially obscured due to a defect in the purpose-built, wave-shaped Aquatics Centre.

Separately, Greek triple-jumper Voula Papachristou was kicked out of the Olympics for a racist tweet which poked fun at Africans living in her country.

And athletics' world governing body said 10 athletes had been barred for doping, including Morocco's women's 1500m runner Mariem Alaoui Selsouli who failed a test earlier this month.

Anti-drugs officials said the London Olympics would be most stringently patrolled Games yet, boosted by a sophisticated new test for human growth hormone.

"It's a very significant step and it's a very helpful one," said World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Director General David Howman.

"Every step is significant if it ends up catching someone who has been cheating with impunity."

At the Games, Usain Bolt is hoping for a second successive sprint treble, Michael Phelps needs just three more swimming medals to become history's most decorated Olympian, and Roger Federer leads a galaxy of tennis stars.

China, who topped the medals table at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, arrived at the athletes village as thousands of competitors, coaches, officials and media poured through London's Heathrow Airport and headed to Olympic Park.

"All athletes and teams are in good spirits and are performing their training every day as scheduled," said China's deputy chef de mission Xiao Tian.

"They're very eager to compete with athletes from other countries and delegations."

Meanwhile, "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle was set to lead a team of 10,000 participants in the full dress rehearsal for Friday's hotly anticipated opening ceremony.

While details of the show -- which has much to live up to after Beijing 2008's lavish opener -- are a closely guarded secret, it is expected to feature cows and sheep along with Sir Paul McCartney and David Beckham.

Iran plans to sell oil via private group, evade ban

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has reached agreements with European refiners to sell some of its oil through a private consortium, an official said on Saturday, a move designed to circumvent sanctions intended to put pressure on Tehran to halt its disputed nuclear program.

The head of the oil products exporters' union said the agreement between the exporters' union, Iran's central bank, and the oil ministry would get round a European Union ban on shipping insurance for tankers carrying Iranian oil, though he gave few details and did not name the refiners involved.

The EU put into effect a ban on the importation, purchase, or shipping of Iranian oil on July 1, and the Islamic Republic will see its oil exports fall by more than 50 percent this month from last year's regular levels, costing it billions of dollars a month in revenue.

"There have been discussions with European refiners, and a final agreement has even been reached," said Hassan Khosrojerdi, the exporters' union head, according to Iran's Mehr News Agency.

"In accordance with the agreement, it is planned that 20 percent of Iran's oil exports will go through this private consortium."

He added: "It is likely that because of international restrictions, we will give minor privileges or discounts to some of the buyers of our oil."

Khosrojerdi did not say which refiners were involved or how they would receive the oil. Asked what steps had been taken to circumvent the shipping insurance ban, he said only "With the agreement with some of the European refiners, this problem has been solved completely."

Iran's oil ministry authorized the private export of Iranian oil in May, the Iranian Student News Agency reported at the time.

Historically, Iran's National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) was solely responsible for the sale and marketing of Iran's crude.

Before the EU embargo, Iran sold about one fifth of its crude to Europe. EU sanctions targeting insurance have severely disrupted Iran's oil sales to Asia as well, and Japan, one of Iran's top buyers, will import no Iranian crude in July.

NEW YORK (AP) - David Wright singled off Jonathan Papelbon with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the New York Mets to a 6-5 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night that preserved R.A. Dickey's 11-game winning streak.

Mets catcher Josh Thole prevented a run in the eighth when he held on to the ball despite being barreled over at home plate. Daniel Murphy lined a shot off Papelbon's leg for the tying run with two outs in the ninth, setting the stage for Wright.

Cole Hamels outlasted Dickey in a matchup of All-Stars that fizzled from the start. Hounded by recent trade rumors, Hamels pitched seven gritty innings and had two hits. But the Phillies' suspect bullpen couldn't finish off the win after beating the Mets on Wednesday night.

Ike Davis began the ninth with a double off Papelbon (2-3). Thole sacrificed pinch-runner Ronny Cedeno to third before Kirk Nieuwenhuis struck out. Papelbon then hit Jordany Valdespin with a 3-2 pitch and walked Ruben Tejada on a full-count to load the bases.

Dickey pumped his fist in the dugout and Justin Turner smashed a pie in Wright's face during a postgame interview as fans chanted "MVP!" for Wright.

Bobby Parnell (2-1) pitched the ninth for the Mets, winners of six of eight.

Wright hit a two-run homer in the fifth that gave the Mets a brief 4-3 lead and had an RBI single in the third.

Papelbon blew just his second save in 20 chances this season.

Philadelphia tried to add on a run in the eighth when Mike Fontenot attempted to score on pinch-hitter Chase Utley's single to left. But Thole caught the throw from left fielder Scott Hairston, braced himself and held onto the ball when he was slammed into by Fontenot.

Dickey matched a career high by allowing 11 hits, and perhaps gave National League manager Tony La Russa reason to end the debate over whether the knuckleballer should start the All-Star game. In his shaky final start before the break, Dickey gave up five runs - but still avoided a loss. He hasn't lost since April 13 at Atlanta.

Juan Pierre pushed a bunt up the first-base line to score Rollins with the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning after Wright put New York ahead 4-3 in the fifth with a two-out, two-run homer.

Dickey is coming off one of the best months in baseball history. In winning the NL pitcher of the month award for June, he went 5-0 with an 0.93 ERA and had consecutive one-hitters. Dickey became the first starter in the 100 years of tracking ERA to allow five runs in one game and still end a month with an ERA under 1.00, according to stats provided to the Mets by the Elias Sports Bureau.

His July got off to a rocky start.

Jimmy Rollins, who was a homer shy of the cycle, walked leading off and, after two outs, Dickey hit his potential All-Star batterymate Carlos Ruiz with a pitch. Shane Victorino, a switch-hitter batting from the right side against the righty, lined an RBI single to center field for the first run against Dickey in the first inning this year.

The last time these two All-Star pitchers faced each other - in 2010 - Hamels had the Phillies' only hit off Dickey. This time, Hamels popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt in the second inning but beat it out for a single because Dickey was slow to react and his throw to first was late. Rollins then hit an RBI double.

Hairston hit his fifth home run in his 27th at-bat against Hamels, a leadoff shot in the second to pull the Mets to 2-1. Wright's RBI single an inning later tied it.

But the Phillies kept on connecting against Dickey and Hunter Pence had a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Hamels' second hit led to two runs in the sixth. He scored on Rollins' triple. Pierre's bunt gave the Phillies a 5-4 lead.

NOTES: Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was set to play the first of back-to-back games in the field Thursday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and could be activated off the disabled list this weekend. ... The Mets recalled RHP Pedro Beato before the game. ... New York reacquired right-hander Chris Schwinden, claiming him off waivers from the Yankees and optioning him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Let a Thousand Gas Wells Bloom

Whereas the precautionary approach adheres to the Hippocratic dictum of ?above all, do no harm,? the proactionary adheres to the Faustian dictum of striving to overcome limits. The former demands knowledge before action. The latter creates a meshwork of technoscience by treating innovation as both social change and scientific experiment. More argues, ?Being proactive involves not only anticipating before acting, but learning by acting.? This point can be put in engineering terms. A paradox of engineering is that it transforms the world precisely by not modeling all of its complexities. If we attempt to model everything we?ll never leave the drawing board. Testing designs in the real world is an essential component of the social learning process known as progress. According to this principle, the way we developed shale gas (indeed, the way we carry out innovation more broadly) is not just how things must be?it is the way they should be.
