Home > University News > Women?s Studies Program sponsors Sexual Empowerment Week

Western Carolina University?s Women?s Studies Program will host events from Monday, Feb. 4, through Thursday, Feb. 7, designed to help participants gain knowledge to help them develop healthy intimate relationships.

Sexual Empowerment Week activities ranging from question-and-answer sessions to a book discussion will be held in A.K. Hinds University Center and are free and open to the public.

Marilyn Chamberlin, director of women?s studies, said relationships, sexuality and gender identity topics surface in class discussions, and those discussions led to planning a week of events that would offer accurate, comprehensive information on those topics.

?We want participants to explore information that is usually presented either in bits and pieces or presented inaccurately ? information that can help them learn more about their sexual interests and identity, where they fit in and how to develop safer, healthier intimate relationships,? said Chamberlin.

Scheduled events include:

  • A question-and-answer session titled ?All You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex but Didn?t Learn in High School? to be held in the UC Multipurpose Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4;
  • A session titled ?Healthy Relationships? in the UC Multipurpose Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5;
  • A session titled ?Safe Sex? in the UC Multipurpose Room from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6;
  • An informational fair to be held in the UC Grandroom from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7;
  • A book discussion titled ?Shades of Grey: The Reality? in the UC Grandroom from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.

US Steel shrinks 4Q loss to $50M

US Steel reported a smaller fourth-quarter loss as carmakers and other manufacturers used more steel, and it said shipments should rise in the current quarter.

The steel industry has been buffeted by an inconsistent global economy. On Monday, the U.S. Commerce Department reported that overall orders for durable goods rose 4.6 percent in December. But a key gauge of business investment plans rose just 0.2 percent.

"We continue to be challenged by uncertain global economic and steel market conditions," Chairman and CEO John P. Surma said.

The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker lost $50 million, or 35 cents per share for the most recent quarter. A year ago it lost $211 million, or $1.46 per share.

The most recent loss would have been 41 cents per share if not for a favorable settlement of a contract dispute. The result was much better than the loss of 70 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue fell 6.9 percent to $4.49 billion. Analysts had been expecting revenue of $4.33 billion.

The biggest turnaround happened in flat-rolled steel, which is used for cars and heavy equipment. After an operating loss of $72 million a year ago, that segment turned in an $11 million profit in the most recent quarter. Shipments rose 3.7 percent to 3.9 million tons. The larger shipments helped offset a price decline of $20 per ton, to $721.

That helped offset a decline in profits from tubular steel, which is used more by the energy industry. Shipments declined 15.6 percent to 407,000 tons. Pricing fell 5 percent to $1,624 per ton. End users reduced drilling and delayed purchases, and tough competition from steel importers drove down prices, the company said.

For the first quarter, the company said it expects a slight improvement in its European and tubular segments. Tubular volume should pick up, but pricing will be lower.

Its flat-rolled segment will be near breakeven. Steel buyers in North America are still cautious. Spot orders are picking up slightly and spot pricing should rise, but those benefits may be offset by lower prices under long-term contracts, the company said.

For all of 2012, the company lost $124 million, or 86 cents per share. In 2011 it lost $53 million, or 37 cents per share. Revenue fell 2.8 percent to $19.33 billion.

Shares of Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. fell 28 cents to $23.44 in early trading.

Rebel comic aims to exorcise Italian politics' walking dead

POMEZIA, Italy (Reuters) - Comic Beppe Grillo calls four-time Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi a "dwarf zombie", outgoing premier Mario Monti "rigor Montis" and Italy's political class "the walking dead".

Grillo, founder of a movement that will rival even the biggest parties at elections next month, hopes to wipe out the old guard: "We will bring some exorcists to parliament," he said in an interview after a rain-drenched rally south of Rome.

The 64-year-old Grillo is quick with wisecracks but the his 5-Star Movement is no joke. It is currently Italy's second- or third-biggest party, depending on the poll, riding a wave of discontent at conventional politics and economic austerity.

Crossing Italy on his "Tsunami tour", Grillo hopes to overturn Italian politics in a way that has not happened since the "Clean Hands" corruption scandals buried a political generation in the early 1990s, making way for Berlusconi's political rise.

"Grillo is attracting people who are disgusted with politics," said Maurizio Pessato, of pollsters SWG.

Rivals decry the movement as a populist vehicle with vague policy aims and it lost some momentum towards the end of last year as criticism grew that Grillo's authoritarian style was stifling independent voices.

But the 5-Star Movement is still second only to Pier Luigi Bersani's Democratic Party (PD) at 17.2 percent, up almost 2 percentage points in two weeks, an SWG poll published on Friday said, tying Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL), which lost half a percentage point from a week earlier.

That means that more than 50 - Grillo says 100 - of the movement's candidates will fill parliament's 945 seats. None of the 5-Star candidates has ever been there, and most are complete newcomers to politics at any level.

His influence has already guaranteed Italy a new generation of lawmakers - more than half of those elected on February 24-25 will be novices, according to a study published last week.

NOVICES

Instead of the movement's leaders picking its candidates, the 5-Star Movement held a primary, a move the PD copied. Monti picked political novices for his list and Berlusconi's PDL eliminated candidates accused of ties to the mafia.

"A mother of three, a 23-year-old college graduate and an engineer," Grillo said, describing who he voted for in the primary. "Those are the people I want to see in parliament."

A calm, unimposing presence in the privacy of his camper-van, the opposite of the hyperactive, foul-mouthed persona he projects on stage, Grillo is not running for election himself, but is lending his "face and popularity to help others."

Grillo wants a referendum on whether Italy should stay in the euro and has policies ranging from free Internet access to scrapping a planned high speed rail link with France.

But his main appeal is his call to get rid of the political class that has led the country for two decades.

"The PDL says it will not put forward any candidates who are under criminal investigation... There won't be anyone left," Grillo growled from stage in a routine that targeted the politicians he hopes to sweep away.

Corruption and a recession helped turn 5-Star from a fringe movement into a real political force last year. In regional elections in October, it received more than 20 percent of the national vote and became the single-largest party in Sicily.

Thirty-six percent of Italian voters see the movement as the most transparent force in the election, by far the biggest percentage, a separate SWG poll showed on Friday.

The 5-Star Movement's candidates have an average age of 42, the lowest of any party. On Grillo's insistence, none has a criminal record or is under criminal investigation, and all have agreed to serve a maximum of two terms.

During the rally in Pomezia, the candidates stood timidly on stage behind Grillo as he ranted through his campaign routine.

To those concerned about the inexperience of the movement's candidates, Grillo pointed to the unknowns standing behind him: "I'd rather take a shot in the dark with these guys than commit assisted suicide with those others."

Iran launches monkey into space: Report

Iran has successfully launched a live monkey into space, the state news agency IRNA said on Monday, touting it as an advance in a missile and space program that has alarmed the West and Israel.

There was no independent confirmation of the report, which quoted a defense ministry statement. It said the launch coincided "with the days of" the Prophet Mohammad's birthday last week but gave no date.

IRNA said the monkey was sent into space on a Kavoshgar rocket. The rocket reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles) and "returned its shipment intact", IRNA reported.

The Islamic Republic's state-run, English-language Press TV said the monkey was retrieved alive.

Iran announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.

Western powers are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch nuclear warheads. Tehran denies such suggestions and says its nuclear activity is for peaceful energy only.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade Review - Nintendo Life

Obstacle to fun, maybe

If you were to poll gamers at large and ask them what they felt were the worst things about the Wii, chances are you'd hear "waggle" and "bad minigame collections" pretty frequently. In fact they often went hand in hand, and Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is trying its hardest to make sure both of things carry over into the Wii U generation. We can only hope that they don't.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade ? it just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? ? is, as you might guess, a collection of short games that you can play with up to three friends. You might also guess that the games would revolve around an "obstacle" theme, but you'd be wrong; many of them are standard rounds of target practice, hide and seek, or, erm, picking the balloon with the number two on it after the game tells you to pick the balloon with the number two on it. That last one's not much of a game really, but there you go.

The collection is given a sort of theme park approach, with the games broken up into smaller, unlockable areas. Again, you'd expect the space area to contain space-themed games and the Western area to host games with a cowboy flair but by and large everything is just thrown at the wall with no regard for where it lands, and there's no telling what you'll encounter where. Fortunately, we guess, whatever you encounter will be reliably awful, so there's that to look forward to.

The games are hosted by a dead-eyed teddy bear with a stare so cold and creepy that we were constantly on edge for that inevitable moment when he'd pull out a knife. Half of his face is frozen in a bizarre semblance of what we can only assume is the developer's attempt at "'tude", while the other half just passively smiles. This, combined with the fact that his lips don't move when he talks, makes it seem like we've walked in on the bear in the middle of a massive coronary that's doomed to go untreated.

The entire package feels like a holdover from the previous generation; none of the graphics come anywhere near the capabilities of Nintendo's newest console, and the Wii U GamePad barely factors in at all, with each of the games requiring instead a Wii Remote and, often, Nunchuk. This means Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade plays identically to every other poorly-responsive, uninteresting, lazily slapped together mini-game collection you've been doing your best to avoid since 2006.

Every game supports four players; if there are fewer human players than that, the CPU will fill the void. Human players can enter any name for themselves that they like, but oddly the game also requires you to choose a separate name for the bear to call you by. This is because the developers only gave the bear a limited bank of audio files from which to draw, so you may tell the game that your name is William, but then you'll have to choose whether it calls you Chano or Shamus or Julio instead. It's bizarre to say the least.

In each game you'll compete against the other three for points. This nearly always involves waggling as quickly as possible, but sometimes it can rely on maneuvering crosshairs around the screen instead. No game is any more complicated than that, and it often feels as though the developer went out of its way to assign the most frustrating control schemes possible. Some games, for instance, are races that see you hopping from platform to platform. Despite the fact that each player has a perfectly good D-Pad and A button to use, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade requires you to thrust the Wii Remote in the direction you wish to jump. Not that it cares where you actually thrust; it's a crapshoot whether or not the game will ever recognise your input. It's a needless and mandatory use of the least reliable control scheme possible, which is pretty much par for the course here.

The Wii U GamePad only comes into play during the bonus rounds. The rest of the time it features the glass-eyed bear glowing creepily at you and loudly narrating minor gameplay developments without moving his mouth. During the bonus rounds the winner of the previous game spins a roulette wheel, which determines what the bonus game will be. Here the GamePad is used differently than the Wii Remotes, but it's certainly no more fun, and it really does feel like a tacked on addition to what's essentially a low budget Wii cash-in.

The sound effects are beyond terrible, as the four players on-screen avatars laugh and hoot and holler over each other throughout every event, turning everything into a clamorous, cluttered aural monstrosity. The bear barks meaningless platitudes about every minor thing that happens ? from a player grabbing a coin to a player not grabbing a coin ? and while you're not likely to come away from this game feeling fulfilled you're more or less guaranteed a headache.

We'd like to close on a positive note of some kind, but we genuinely can't. This is an absolutely terrible game, and you don't want it. Trust us.

As clunky and poorly considered as its title, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is awful. Relying entirely on the shallow and repetitive waggle that should have died along with Wii, there's absolutely no reason to recommend this obnoxious, screaming, clattering monstrosity at all. It's mindless entertainment at its worst, but, on the bright side, it might be the perfect way to cure your childrens' burgeoning video game addiction.

'Barriers of bodies' trapped Brazil fire victims

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? A fast-moving fire roared through a crowded, windowless nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, filling the air in seconds with flames and a thick, toxic smoke that killed more than 230 panicked partygoers, many of whom were caught in a stampede to escape.

Inspectors believe the blaze began when a band's small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound insulating material on the ceiling, releasing a putrid haze that caused scores of university students to choke to death. Most victims died from smoke inhalation rather than burns in what appeared to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade.

Survivors and the police inspector Marcelo Arigony said security guards briefly tried to block people from exiting the club. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they are allowed to leave.

But Arigony said the guards didn't appear to block fleeing patrons for long. "It was chaotic and it doesn't seem to have been done in bad faith because several security guards also died," he told The Associated Press.

Later, firefighters responding to the blaze initially had trouble getting inside the Kiss nightclub because "there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance," Guido Pedroso Melo, commander of the city's fire department, told the O Globo newspaper.

Authorities said band members who were on the stage when the fire broke out later talked with police and confirmed they used pyrotechnics during their show.

Police inspector Sandro Meinerz, who coordinated the investigation at the nightclub, said one band member died after escaping because he returned inside the burning building to save his accordion. The other band members escaped alive because they were the first to notice the fire.

"It was terrible inside ? it was like one of those films of the Holocaust, bodies piled atop one another," said Meinerz. "We had to use trucks to remove them. It took about six hours to take the bodies away."

Television images from Santa Maria, a university city of about 260,000 people, showed black smoke billowing out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who attended the university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at the hot-pink exterior walls, trying to reach those trapped inside.

Bodies of the dead and injured were strewn in the street and panicked screams filled the air as medics tried to help. There was little to be done; officials said most of those who died were suffocated by smoke within minutes.

Within hours a community gym was a horror scene, with body after body lined up on the floor, partially covered with black plastic as family members identified kin.

Outside the gym police held up personal objects ? a black purse, a blue high-heeled shoe ? as people seeking information on loved ones crowded around, hoping not to recognize anything being shown them.

Teenagers sprinted from the scene after the fire began, desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. Many of the victims were under 20 years old, including some minors. About half of those killed were men, about half women.

The party was organized by students from several academic departments from the Federal University of Santa Maria. Such organized university parties are common throughout Brazil.

"There was so much smoke and fire, it was complete panic, and it took a long time for people to get out, there were so many dead," survivor Luana Santos Silva told the Globo TV network.

The fire spread so fast inside the packed club that firefighters and ambulances could do little to stop it, Silva said.

Another survivor, Michele Pereira, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage when members of the band lit some sort of flare that started the conflagration.

"The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward," she said. "At that point, the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak, but in a matter of seconds it spread."

Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning."

"It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it," he said. "When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working."

He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello said by telephone that the toll had risen to 233 with the death of a hospitalized victim. He said earlier that the death toll was likely made worse because the nightclub appeared to have just one exit through which patrons could exit.

Officials earlier counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in Santa Maria, which is located at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay.

Federal Health Minister Alexandre Padhilha told a news conference that most of the 117 people treated in hospitals had been poisoned by gases they breathed during the fire. Only a few suffered serious burns, he said.

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff arrived to visit the injured after cutting short her trip to a Latin American-European summit in Chile.

"It is a tragedy for all of us," Rousseff said.

Most of the dead apparently were asphyxiated, according to Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the medical school of the Federal University of Santa Maria who went to the city's Caridade Hospital to help victims.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity.

Survivors, police and firefighters gave the same account of a band member setting the ceiling's soundproofing ablaze, he said.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame told the AP.

"The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom. Apparently they confused the bathroom door with the exit door."

In the hospital, the doctor "saw desperate friends and relatives walking and running down the corridors looking for information," he said, calling it "one of the saddest scenes I have ever witnessed."

Rodrigo Moura, identified by the newspaper Diario de Santa Maria as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309.

In 2004, at least 194 people died in a fire at an overcrowded nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Seven members of a band were sentenced to prison for starting the flames.

A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, killed 152 people in December 2009 after an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches.

Similar circumstances led to a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people in the United States. Pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of a Rhode Island music venue.

The band performing in Santa Maria, Gurizada Fandangueira, plays a driving mixture of local Brazilian country music styles. Guitarist Martin told Radio Gaucha the musicians are already seeing hostile messages.

"People on the social networks are saying we have to pay for what happened," he said. "I'm afraid there could be retaliation".

Novel materials: Smart and magnetic

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Varying magnetic fields and temperature conditions help to elucidate smart materials' transitory magnetic disorder

Novel, smart materials like shape memory alloys very often display so-called glass-like magnetism. Other smart materials with similar properties include those which, when exposed to a magnetic field, change their electrical resistance, known as manganites, or change their temperature, known as magnetocaloric materials. Kaustav Mukherjee and his colleagues from the Consortium for Scientific Research Indore in India studied a key stage in the formation of such a magnetic glass material, called Pr0.5 Ca0.5 Mn0.975 Al0.025 O3, in a paper about to be published in The European Physical Journal B.

They focused on the stage where 'water to ice' style transformation -- referred to as first-order magnetic transformation -- is arrested upon cooling. This is a phenomenon dubbed kinetic arrest, corresponding to a temperature where the material undergoes a transition from a magnetic to a non-magnetic state, with the two phases competing with each other.

Glass-like magnetic materials display fragile magnetic properties. They draw their name from the similarity to the fragility observed in conventional, chemical glass. If a magnetic field is applied while the sample is cooled to what is referred to as its transition temperature, magnetisation of the sample increases and the material becomes magnetic. However, the magnetisation continues to increase further with time, even if the magnetic field and temperature remain constant.

The authors performed bulk measurements of magnetisation on powder samples of Pr0.5 Ca0.5 Mn0.975 Al0.025 O3, at the transition point between magnetic and non-magnetic states. To do so, they simultaneously varied both the magnetic field and the temperature of the sample. They observed the formation of the kinetic arrest band and showed that it is inversely correlated with states reached at extremes of temperature described at supercooling and superheating bands. They then established that the kinetic arrested state is different from the supercooled state.

Fox News, Palin cutting ties

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fox News Channel is parting ways with former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, ending her three-year tenure as a contributor on the network.

While Palin's time at Fox was occasionally rocky, the network's news executive, Bill Shine, said Friday that "we have thoroughly enjoyed our association" with her.

"We wish her the best in her future endeavors," said Shine, Fox's executive vice president for programming.

A person familiar with discussions between Fox and Palin described the parting as amicable, saying that Fox and Palin had discussed renewing her contract but she decided to do other things. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Palin's lawyer in Alaska, John Tiemessen, had no immediate comment on her exit. Palin's last appearance on Fox News was Dec. 19 on Greta Van Susteren's show.

Palin signed to deliver commentary on Fox in January 2010, reportedly for $1 million a year. It was a coup for both sides at the time; the former Alaska governor was a little more than a year removed from her attention-getting run for the vice presidency and was considered one of the leading contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination. At Fox, she had a platform on the most popular network for conservative viewers. Fox installed equipment in Palin's Wasilla, Alaska, home to make her regular appearances easier.

But there were some indications of tension between her and Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, who was quoted in a 2011 story by The Associated Press saying, "I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings."

When Palin announced she would not be a candidate in 2012, she said it on a conservative radio show, which didn't sit well with the company paying her to be a contributor. Palin took to her Facebook page late last summer to complain that Fox had cancelled her appearances one night at the GOP national convention; Fox said it was simply because the GOP had to condense its speaker schedule due to a hurricane.

Four years removed from her vice presidential candidacy, Palin's influence had waned and she was somewhat overshadowed as a contributor at Fox by Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's top political aide. Rove recently renewed his contract at Fox through the 2016 election.

With four more years of a Barack Obama administration in power, Fox recently hired former Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich as a contributor.

Articles on Preparing Quality Online Content for the Mind ...

As an online article writer I've been truly amazed at which articles Internet readers most enjoy. That is to say which articles I write that draw the most traffic. You must understand that mere "traffic" is not my goal, I like to write about things I like to write about. If that draws more readers online, all the better, but it's really not my priority at all. In fact, I never look at keywords, I just write on the topics that I have knowledge and interest in. This is one of those articles, and I'd like to explain why.
You see, I've learned something that you, as an online article author, may not know, nor did I at first, rather it's something that I've learned the hard way, through trial and error and reviewing some of my past article view statistics. Here is what I've learned; online information seekers are much like channel checkers, they move around the Internet looking for bits and pieces of inspiration, nuance, and interesting information. When they are in this information seeking mode, one of their most favorite topics seems to be self-help categories. Within this sector is a smaller niche; mind development.
This is where the thinkers go, not the folks who follow the paparazzi stories such as "what Paris Hilton ate for breakfast," or any of that jazz. Okay so, let's say you want to reach the more intellectual crowd at a time when they are completely open to new information? Well, it would be when they are out searching for memory or mind development information online. That makes sense right? Now then, how do you prepare quality content on this most fascinating topic? Well, let's talk about that shall we?
I found the people like two different types of article in this venue. Some like the articles which have tips and new strategies for improving memory and brain function, and others enjoy articles that make them think and that really generate some philosophical thought.
If you're going to prepare articles with tips and strategies, such as various types of food to eat to improve brain function, or types of mental exercise to do, then you should prepare those in bulleted lists, or numerated so they can quickly scan the article, and go try out some of those new ideas.
Preparing quality content for the intellectual philosophical crowd on mind development can be done very easily by taking one specific tip for improvement and putting it into a scenario, story, or setting, and then allowing the reader to understand the moral of the story, uptake that information, and make them think about the process. This ladder strategy seems to work quite well, and I am heartened by some of the great e-mails I get after people read such articles of this type. Please consider all this and think on it.

Lucas Martins thought his manager was pranking him about UFC on FX 7 debut

Lucas Martins is making his UFC debut at UFC on FX 7 on Saturday night as a late add to the card. Justin Salas was injured in training around New Year's Eve, and Martins didn't believe it when he got the call to fill in. He told MMA Junkie he thought his management was pranking him.

"It was New Year's Day," Martins said. "I could not believe my management and the UFC were working on New Year's Day. When they called I thought, 'Is this a joke? This is New Year's Day. No one is working. They are recovering from the celebration."

Now, that would be a mean joke. Hey, Lucas your dream has just come true! Call your friends, your family and everyone who has ever helped you get to the UFC ... oh wait. We're kidding. Pretty sure I'd fire my manager for a joke like that.

But Martins' record is no joke. He's 12-0, and won the last six fights by knockout or submission, making him an interesting test for Edson Barboza.

Cancer suppressor gene links metabolism with cellular aging

Jan. 13, 2013 ? It is perhaps impossible to overstate the importance of the tumor suppressor gene p53. It is the single most frequently mutated gene in human tumors. p53 keeps pre-cancerous cells in check by causing cells, among other things, to become senescent -- aging at the cellular level. Loss of p53 causes cells to ignore the cellular signals that would normally make mutant or damaged cells die or stop growing.

In short, the p53 pathway is an obvious and attractive target for drug developers. But that strategy has so far proven difficult, as most p53 regulatory proteins operate via protein-protein interactions, which make for poor drug targets, as opposed to ones based on enzymes.

Now, a team of researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, has identified a class of p53 target genes and regulatory molecules that represent more promising therapeutic candidates.

As Xiaolu Yang, PhD, professor of Cancer Biology and investigator in Penn's Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, and his team describe in an advance online Nature publication, p53 participates in a molecular feedback circuit with malic enzymes, thereby showing that p53 activity is also involved in regulating metabolism.(The Yang lab identified p53's role in glucose metabolism in the past.)

The new findings, Yang says, suggest that p53 acts as a molecular sensor of metabolic stress and explains how metabolic stress can lead to senescence in cells.

"We uncovered an important regulatory mechanism for p53 as well as an effector mechanism for p53," Yang says.

Significantly, the findings also identify malic enzymes as novel and potentially useful pharmaceutical targets for anticancer therapy, as well as possible mediators of the normal aging process -- though neither possibility was actually addressed in the current study.

As cells become damaged and precancerous, the p53 protein prevents those cells from continuing towards becoming tumors by causing the cells to senesce. Metabolic cues also regulate senescence, but the molecular relays coupling those two processes -- senescence and metabolism -- remained unknown.

Yang and his team decided to test if a pair of enzymes, malic enzyme 1 and malic enzyme 2 (ME1 and ME2), could be involved. Malic enzymes recycle malate -- an intermediate molecule -- back into an end-product of glycolysis -- pyruvate -- storing energy in the process. Malic enzymes are important for adjusting metabolic flux to suit proliferating cells' demands for energy and biosynthesis. Thus, these two enzymes are attuned to the energy and proliferative state of the cell.

Yang's team found that p53 inhibits malic enzyme expression, such that loss of p53 causes malic enzyme abundance to increase. Conversely, malic enzymes keep p53 in check; loss of malic enzymes ramps up p53 activation and induces senescence via either downregulation of a p53 inhibitor (Mdm2) or production of oxygen radicals. Overexpression of malic enzymes inhibits senescence.

The result, Yang explains, is a "feed-forward loop" in which activation of p53 suppresses malic enzyme expression, reducing malic enzyme levels and further upregulating p53, leading to senescence. On the other hand, upregulation of malic enzymes inhibits p53. p53 inhibition loosens the protein's grip on malic enzyme expression, allowing malic enzyme levels to rise.

"This is a circuit," he says. "Going around this loop, you get pretty robust activation."

These same results played out in animal models described in the Nature study. Loss of either ME1 or ME2 reduced tumor weight, even with p53-null tumor cells, which suggests an additional, p53-independent function of malic enzymes. And, overexpression of malic enzymes led to more substantial tumors.

According to Yang, the study pegs malic enzymes as molecular players linking senescence and metabolic state. Those enzymes could potentially serve as anticancer drug targets, he says. But equally important, they may also play a role in the normal process of cellular aging.

"Senescence is aging at the cellular level," says Yang, who notes that considerable research has demonstrated a correlation between caloric restriction and lifespan. "We may have identified a good starting point to understand how aging works."

Daily Kos: Seattle teachers refuse to give flawed standardized test

Teachers at two Seattle high schools are standing up and saying "no" to a deeply flawed mandatory standardized test, the Measures of Academy Progress.

Teachers at Garfield High kicked off the rebellion when they said they would refuse to administer the MAP to their students. Then, 25 teachers at Ballard High followed suit with an anti-MAP statement. Both groups of teachers focus not on opposition to all testing, but to the MAP specifically, which they argue is too flawed to use. According to the Garfield teachers:

  • Seattle Public School staff has notified us that the test is not a valid test at the high school level. For these students, the margin of error is greater than the expected gain. We object to spending time, money, and staffing on an assessment even SPS agrees is not valid.
  • We are not allowed to see the contents of the test, but an analysis of the alignment between the Common Core and MAP shows little overlap. We object to our students being tested on content we are not expected to teach.
  • Ninth graders and students receiving extra support (ELL, SPED, and students in math support) are targets of the MAP test. These students are in desperate need of MORE instructional time. Instead, the MAP test subtracts many hours of class time from students? schedules each year. If we were to participate this year, we would take 805 students out of class during 112 class periods. The amount of lost instructional time is astounding. On average students would EACH lose 320 minutes of instructional time. This is over 5 hours of CORE class time (language arts and math) that students are losing. We object to participating in stealing instructional time from the neediest students.
The Ballard teachers point out that:
The MAP test was purchased under corrupt crony-ist circumstances (Our former superintendent, while employed by Seattle Public Schools (SPS) sat on the corporation board of NWEA, the purveyor of the MAP test. This was undisclosed to her employer. The initial MAP test was purchased in a no-bid, non-competitive process.) [...]

The MAP test is not taken seriously by students, (They don?t need the results for graduation, for applications, for course credit, or any other purpose, so they routinely blow it off.)

While this opposition is specifically to the MAP and its many huge problems, the rebellion points to problems common to many standardized tests. As Jerry Neufeld-Kaiser, a social studies teacher at Garfield, wrote to the Washington Post's Valerie Strauss:
Standardized tests CAN be an okay way to assess student learning, but many of the tests that get used have serious flaws. These problems are in no way unique to the MAP test. There is considerable research that shows convincingly that high-stakes standardized tests often have cultural bias, including class and race biases. And so on.

The problem we have today is we don?t have a really good test that we can trust. Yet we need one, because of the advantages of standardization, including the cost and ease of administering them (compared to, say, debates). So we use the tests we have, despite their flaws.

The MAP appears to be a perfect storm of the problems with standardized testing: put in place through a corrupt, profit-driven process; with an unacceptably high margin of error; not measuring the things students are actually supposed to be learning; and taking needed time away from instructional time in order for students to take a test they don't take seriously. But while its problems may be especially large, they're not unique. What these teachers are doing in saying no to the MAP is brave, it's in their students' best interests, and it's yet another demonstration of how badly teachers' voices are needed in the broader education policy debate.

World's oldest woman dies at 115

TOKYO (AP) ? A Japanese official says a woman in his town near Tokyo who became world's oldest living female just last month has died at 115.

Koto Okubo died Saturday at a nursing home in Kawasaki City, according to city official Mitsuhiro Kozuka. He said her relatives declined to release the cause of her death and family details.

Born Dec. 24, 1897, Okubo held her title for less than a month following the death of Dina Manfredini of the United States.

Manfredini died within two weeks after becoming the world's oldest person. Jiroemon Kimura, a 115-year-old man in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto, inherited that title. He was born on April 19, 1897.

The city official said Okubo had lived with one of her sons at the same nursing home.

How the cell phone is helping Ghanaian farmers | Africasti.com

Robert Owusu

Robert Owusu

Ghana is experimenting with a novel, ICT- driven means of agricultural information exchange. Robert Owusu is the Managing Director of Esoko, the mobile phone information system serving rural farmers in Ghana. He explains to AfricaSTI.com in Accra, the benefits of using the mobile phone service to improve agriculture and the livelihood of farmers. Excerpts:

Key issues in Ghanaian Agriculture
I am not an expert in agriculture but I know that most Ghanaian farmers are small holder farmers, and some of the challenges are : producers don?t know where to sell; the farmers find it difficult to sell what they have produced; traders don?t know where to buy; wholesalers can?t predict their supplies because sometimes you put up a factory but the supplies are not forthcoming; you produce today , you cannot produce tomorrow because there are no produce from the farmers. That also means government cannot plan for food security. All these because of something that is critical. And that is information.
So what we tried to find out the information needs within the agric sector or from the farmers based on our experience, we discovered that they will be asking questions like: Where do I get extension advice? What is the right price? Who is buying? Where can I buy fertilizer or farm input? What harvest will I get? Are the rains falling? Where are my customers? Where is my truck? Can I trust the buyer to pay for what they have bought? All this brings us to extension services: it?s about weather; it?s about input; it?s about processing; and it?s about transportation. Those are what they are looking for information for.

Mobile phones and information dissemination in Ghana
If you look at the mobile phone, the penetration is high, if you take for example, Ghana, the government of Ghana claimed that the penetration of mobile phone is about 80% that means that about 19 million Ghanaians have mobile phones . We don?t believe that, we think that it may be roughly about 60% or less because some people are using two ,three phones and they are in the cities but in terms of coverage of the mobile phone operators and where you can get access , mobile phone is more around within the country than any other commodity because it?s going faster than electricity, water, health, services and school. So if we use the mobile phone in disseminating this information, then, that will be a success and that is why we are beginning the Esoko. Esoko tries to bring how you can use the mobile to communicate and give information to farmers.

How Esoko works Esoko2
Esoko starts with price alert and what we do is , if anybody has got a phone , and he types in ?1900? and he puts in say, ?maize? or ?yam?, you can easily get the prices from the key commodity market in the country through the mobile phone right now as we speak, you can test it, or you do for rice, cassava, you will get immediate response. Apart from this, we also have farmers already programmed on our profile in the network on our platform. Those who for instance have selected their prices for maize, on weekly bases they receive the price. They want to know the prices on Wednesday because thy will be going to the market on Thursday, or they want to get the prices on Friday because they will be going to the market on Saturday. You can set that as an alert and the message will come to you through your mobile phone showing all the prices that are obtainable in the key markets across the country.
We are doing this by having about 33 agents operating in 38 markets around the country for all major agricultural commodities in the country. And in terms of the commodities, we are covering about 58 markets and recording data on weekly bases in the country, and we are also using the project trying to do a pilot in cape coast to know if there has been an impact on the people. And from what the farmers are saying, because now they have insight into pricing and what is happening in the market place they are saying they are able to improve their income between 25%- 40% but scientifically we have not bothered ourselves to find out if what they are saying is true or not.
Most of them are claiming that they are willing to pay for these services, but now it?s free so they may say they will pay but when it comes to paying whether they will pay or not is a different ball game. But at least that?s what they are saying. Most of them are also claiming that it is benefiting them but we will know when they start paying on their own because this project is being sponsored and we are supplying this information to them for free, this is so because you can go on our platform now and just sign yourself on the platform and you will see the prices alerts depending on the commodity that you select. But at now researchers from the New York university are now doing a study here in Ghana , they started last year, it will end in 2013 , that is when we will know if the mobile information on pricing have helped improve farmers income and their livelihood. The study is on-going, we will know when the result comes out.

How the mobile phone works with the Esoko
Beyond pricing, the mobile phone can be used in terms of trading, we have a system where if you have a ton of maize and you want to sell it you can just pick up your mobile phone and text in ?sell , maize, two tons? and this message will move into our platform and those who have been programmed on the platform to receive the messages will get the information that somebody wants to sell maize two tons at a particular price and this is his contact. So if you are one of the traders you can contact the person for negotiation on how to buy the maize. That is what we are using the phone to do. We also use the phone to send out information and news alerts or whatever is happening just by SMS push. We can send the SMS to the people who have been programmed on the platform. What we have is that if you are a researcher or you are doing any business, you just programme your members into cassava growers, maize growers, whatever you want or any way you want to classify them, you can classify them by districts, or by regions, so that if something is happening within a certain region you can easily transmit that message to that specific region, to those specific people who are on your profile on that network and use it to communicate with that target group.
The same platform can be used if you want to send coupon, instead of sending paper coupon, you can decide to use the mobile coupons and transmit it to farmers or anybody, also by a mobile phone. You can also use it to do simple polls, asking basic questions like, have you planted? Yes or No, if not when will you do that? This simple questions can also be used to do polls on the platform, you can also use it to give you stock alerts to tell you the stock you have in your warehouse or in the farm, you can use it to send alerts about transportation .
And for those of you who are researchers, you can do a small poll per say, send the reports just by SMS message to the recipient if the respondent have just respond the result can be capture if they are on the platform and the analysis will be done so it is very simple to use just because it has a very limited usage ,if you want to use a very large research that means you cannot use the SMS platform because of these limitations . You can use the Android phone or the Java application because they are smart phones and they have the ability to do more interactions that can be used for the Esoko.

On the challenges of the mobile platform
There are some challenges in terms of using this platform, currently most SMS have about 169 characters but on our platform you can see up to 560 characters so anything beyond that, you will not be able to transmit that message on the platform and that is a limitation because you cannot use the platform to send much information but only about 560 characters.
You also need to rely on mobile phone operators to deliver the SMS message, in case the network is down, then your recipient will not receive the message and they may not give you the feedback that you need. There is also another limitation for mobile phone services, for somebody to use it effectively, the person must know how to read and write or interpret the message through the mobile phone and that is another challenge to most of our farmers around Africa because reading and interpreting the message you need some skills in doing that which is a limitation.
And when you do a poll by SMS, you send the questions, people have to respond, how do you motivate them to give you the response? If you are in the field it?s a face to face ,so the person have no alternative but to respond to what you have asked him but you can send an SMS to thousands of people but getting the response is an issue . So what we do is that when you send a message to people you tell them that if they respond they get a certain unit of a mobile phone credit, if you do that then you may get people responding if they have the ability to interpret the message and understand it then they can respond effectively to it.
In spite of this , based on our learning and experience in dealing with this project , we have realized that for any good market information system service (M.I.S) you need to address the needs of the target groups because if not, the message may go and they wouldn?t understand or read it. It should also be timely and effective in delivering the message to the audience, the technology should be easily accessible, the message should be clear and understandable and it should be localized ,relevant and customized. This means that you should use the language that the people understand because if they don?t understand they will not respond. It should be timely and accurate, it should be convenient and inexpensive. It should also focus on implementation, training reinforcement and marketing because if you have a product and you didn?t promote and advertise it people will not know.
