Navigating a Tight Rental Market | Healthcare Concerns

When Kathleen Marin and her boyfriend first moved to the Baltimore area in 2008, their two-bedroom town house cost them $1,100 a month. But over the next 2? years, as demand flooded the rental market in their area, the landlord gradually upped their rent to $1,400.
Buying a home wasn?t an option for the 27-year-old student, who works part time and has a limited credit history. So late last year, the couple sought out a cheaper place. After searching online listings and visiting properties nightly for three weeks, they eventually found an apartment for $1,200 that they plan to move into in May.
But the cheaper place comes with another price: a lot less space (one floor instead of their current two-story town house) and a dated kitchen.

The rental market is the tightest it?s been in more than a decade, with only 5.2% of apartments nationwide vacant at the end of 2011, down from a high of 8% in 2009, according to real-estate data firm Reis.
Demand is up as the housing crisis and tighter lending standards have left many people unable to or wary of purchasing a home. And higher demand means average rents are rising, too.
To find the best deal possible in this market you first need to figure out what makes one rental cheaper than others in a given area. For instance, space in new apartment buildings is at a premium since relatively few buildings have been built since the housing crisis. That means the best deals can be found in older constructions, though even these are pricier these days.
And amenities?and rents?can fluctuate substantially within a single building. An apartment on a lower floor will typically cost less than one on a higher floor. So will one with an obstructed view and little direct sunlight. The two-bedroom apartment Ms. Marin is moving into has a kitchen and appliances that are more dated than in some other apartments in the building.
When checking out an apartment, ask the real-estate or rental agent if there are less-expensive properties available. Ms. Marin and her boyfriend did so and snagged an apartment in the complex that was $120 cheaper than the one they were originally shown.
If you are looking to rent a single-family home, that market is even more competitive since there are fewer such properties on the market. In many places, monthly rent for a single-family dwelling runs more than a monthly mortgage payment on a similar property would, says Michael Labout, a residential real-estate broker in Colorado Springs, Colo.
If renting a home is a temporary solution, you can save money by looking in a less-than-ideal school district if you don?t have school-age children or on a noisy street. Multifamily dwellings also are typically cheaper than single-family homes.
A newer entry into the rental market is homes being rented by owners who haven?t been able to sell. With information on local rental prices widely available online, these first-time landlords will likely be asking for market prices, says Jed Smith, managing director for quantitative research at the National Association of Realtors. Since their ultimate goal is to sell the property, these landlords may be more serious about maintenance of the property than a landlord who owns multiple properties, he says. So make sure a lease specifies who is responsible for taking care of?and paying for?what.
And if you see a place that you really like that?s been for sale for an extended period, inquire about renting it instead. Owners may be open to a deal if they are desperate.
When it comes to negotiating rent, in this market you need to approach it the same way you would a home purchase. That means finding out what the comparable rents in the area are and presenting that data to the landlord.
In a landlords? market, ?it will be more difficult to negotiate a lower rate, but the key to negotiating? will be comparable properties, says Mr. Smith. If you point out that an apartment is going for more than market rate, you?re likely to get it down to market rate.
Also, showing a potential landlord your credit report to prove that you aren?t a financial risk can help you get a lower payment in some cases, says Mr. Smith.
If you?re handy, look for a fixer-upper rental. There are many more of them these days since landlords are confident they?ll be able to rent them with all of the demand. You can suggest making repairs in exchange for lower rent, says Mr. Labout. Just be sure to get it in writing.

New strategies for treatment of infectious diseases
ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? The immune system protects from infections by detecting and eliminating invading pathogens. These two strategies form the basis of conventional clinical approaches in the fight against infectious diseases. In the latest issue of the journal Science, Miguel Soares from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci?ncia (Portugal) together with Ruslan Medzhitov from Yale University School of Medicine and David Schneider from Stanford University propose that a third strategy needs to be considered: tolerance to infection, whereby the infected host protects itself from infection by reducing tissue damage and other negative effects caused by the pathogen or the immune response against the invader.
The authors argue that identifying the mechanisms underlying this largely overlooked phenomenon may pave the way to new strategies to treat many human infectious diseases. Upon invasion by pathogens (bacteria, viruses or parasites), the immune system kicks into action, by detecting, destroying and ultimately eliminating the pathogen. This so-called "resistance to infection" is crucial in protecting the host from infection, but is often accompanied by collateral damage to some of the host's vital tissues (liver, kidney, heart, brain). If uncontrolled tissue damage may have lethal consequences, as often happens, for example, in severe malaria, severe sepsis and possibly other infectious diseases.
Tolerance reduces the harmful impact of infection and of the ensuing immune response on the host. Although a well-studied phenomenon in plant immunity, tolerance to infection has been largely overlooked in mammals, including humans. While there is still much to be learnt about how and under which circumstances tolerance to infection is employed by the host, most of what is currently known about the molecular mechanisms underlying this host defense strategy comes from work carried out at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci?ncia by the group led by Miguel Soares.
The team is particularly interested in identifying disease-specific tolerance mechanisms, on the one hand, and also general strategies of tolerance, that may, possibly, be employed protectively, to precondition the host to future infections. Because resistance is, generally, the only mechanism considered in animal and human studies, when the host capitulates to infection it is often attributed to failure of the immune system.
The authors argue that this is not always the case, and underscore the importance of distinguishing between failed resistance and failed tolerance as the cause for morbidity and mortality by infectious diseases. This distinction will dictate the choice of therapeutic approaches. When the primary problem is failed tolerance, then boosting the immune system, or administering antibiotics, may be ineffective. In this case, enhancing tolerance would possibly be much more effective in fighting infectious, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases.

Ancient Maya doom teaches climate lesson

Scientists have long assumed that the Classic Maya civilization was done in more than a millennium ago by a series of droughts, but now they say natural records suggest those?droughts were "modest," with no more than a 40 percent reduction in rainfall. And that, in turn, suggests that similarly modest climate changes over the next century could have a not-so-modest effect.
"What seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems ... Today, we have the benefit of awareness, and we should act accordingly," Martin Medina-Elizalde, a researcher at the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in Mexico, said in a news release.
The study ? conducted by Medina-Elizalde and Eelco Rohling, a colleague from the University of Southampton ? appears in this week's issue of the journal Science. It addresses one of the big mysteries of Maya history: What caused a civilization that dominated areas of present-day Guatemala and Mexico in the year 800 to collapse by the year 1000? Deforestation and drought have figured prominently as the prime suspects, but just how dire did those droughts get?
To shed additional light on the mystery, the two climate experts analyzed chemicals in lake sediments, marine shells and cave stalagmites to track variations in rainfall. For example, the ratio of oxygen-16 to oxygen-18 in a particular layer of mineral can tell you how much rainfall fell during the season when the mineral was laid down. Such variations can be read year by year, like tree rings.

The elements in different layers of stalagmites in Yucatan Peninsula caves, such as this one, were analyzed to determine how rainfall varied through the centuries.
The researchers found that there was indeed a deficit in rainfall in the period between the years 800 and 1000. But that deficit was modest, amounting to a 25 to 40 percent reduction in the drought years. Medina-Elizalde and Rohling assume that the droughts took the form of reductions in the frequency and intensity of tropical storms during the summer.
"Summer was the main season for cultivation and replenishment of Mayan freshwater storage systems, and there are no rivers in the Yucatan lowlands," Rohling said in the news release. "Societal disruptions and abandonment of cities are likely consequences of critical water shortages, especially because there seems to have been a rapid repetition of multiyear droughts."
In an email, Medina-Elizalde told me that "these droughts may not have been strong enough to cause by themselves the collapse of the civilization, but they were likely strong enough and persistent enough ... to cause major sociopolitical disruptions that ultimately led to the final outcome."
"Let's imagine that today, from one year to another, major cities can no longer supply fresh water to a third of their populations. ... With no freshwater pumping systems, how would we keep producing agricultural produce and supplying fresh water to support the entire populations of these cities?" he wrote.
Today, much of the Yucatan Peninsula's rural population still relies on summer rainfall to support their crops. Medina-Elizalde said access to fresh water isn't so much of a problem, thanks to modern pumping systems. But he noted that lower-than-average summer rains still "have fairly dire consequences" for local farmers.
The current models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predict that there could be annual rainfall reductions of up to 50 percent in the Yucatan Peninsula by the end of this century, Medina-Elizalde said. He and his colleagues are studying how such reductions might affect freshwater supplies in the region.
"Some climate models suggest that local vegetation does contribute to increase rainfall significantly ... which would suggest that by preserving the forests, we are mitigating the impacts of climate change," he said. "Definitely, local governments need to start making serious efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in light of the forecast for the next decades."

The most logical?explanation that I could come up with for the increased number of peanut allergies was overexposure. ?Since at one point you could find traces of peanuts as an ingredient or filler in many food products. ?The same for gluten, its an ingredient in toothpaste,?shampoo, make-up, gum, lotions, medications, sauces, gravies and all wheat products. ?While we?re on the subject of wheat, this is one grain that you?ll want to keep your eye on, because it?s one of the next grains soon to be effected by what you read below. ?Why is it that we have such high cases of food allergies and high levels of food?intolerance IBS and IBDs, especially?now when compared to 15 or 20 years ago? What happens to the GI Tract after it?s been exposed to toxic chemicals over long periods of time? You?ll discover the answers to many of these questions as you read on. ?Once you begin to take a closer look at what we?ve been exposed to, you?ll quickly realize that overexposure is only a small glimpse into a much larger issue. To really understand where we are today, we?d have to travel back to the mid 90?s when we stopped eating real food.
?In 1996 the food industry changed and not necessarily for the good. New proteins were engineered into our food supply to maximize?profitability?in the food?industry. ?This was after synthetic protein hormones were injected directly into cows with adverse reactions in 1994, so the government had to find another way,which was adding the?synthetic?protein directly to the livestock food supply. While the US allowed the use of GMO proteins because it had not been proven dangerous, Canada, Australia, the UK, and 27 other European?countries did not allow its use, because there were no studies available to show how these chemicals effected the livestock much less the effects on human health after consumption. When you hear the term ?synthetic protein hormone? you have to wonder about both the long-term and short-term effects of exposure to elevated hormone levels and it?s effects on humans and if there?s a link to breast, prostate, colon cancer and other types of cancers. ?In 2008?Dr. Leonard Hardell and Dr. Mikael Eriksson of Sweden, revealed clear links between one of the world?s biggest selling herbicide, glyphosate (commonly known as Roundup, marketed by Monsanto), to non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of cancer. Keep this in mind as you read along. ?According to Livestrong and American Cancer Society, the US has the highest rates of cancer than any other country in the world. If you move to the US from another country your chances of developing cancer increase exponentially. According to cancer research studies 1 out of 2 american men and 1 out of 3 american women will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime. ?1 out of 8 american women will develop breast cancer and out this group only 1 in 10 is genetic. ?This means that 9 out of 10 of these cases are environmentally triggered. ?These chemicals which cause allergic reactions, and trigger the inflammatory response in the body are also responsible?for the increased incidents of certain types of cancer.

Scientists were able to modify the soybean, by taking genes from bacteria and forcing it into DNA of the soybean plant, causing it to produce a protein that would allow it to withstand increasing amounts of Monsanto Roundup Herbicide?by absorbing its main ingredient glyphosate. ?Soy is known as the?first Roundup Ready crop, and was produced at Monsanto?s Agracetus in 1991. ?In 1996 the US?incorporated?this newly modified bean into our food source. If this isn?t enough to make you cringe, just wait to hear what scientist were able to do with corn. There was an increasing concern of?insecticide?being?sprayed?over?cornfields, so scientist were able to genetically?modify?corn by engineering this very insecticide into the DNA of a?corn seed, so that as the corn plant grew it released its own insecticide. ?As a result, corn was then regulated by the EPA as an insecticide. So in essence, when we eat GMO corn we are essentially eating an?insecticide.
Those of us who suffer from chronic inflammatory conditions and auto-immune disease want to be especially mindful of these facts, because these same harmful chemicals can also?exacerbate?these conditions and make those of us with weakened?immune?systems more?susceptible. The European Parliament passed laws in July 2003 on products?containing?GMO foods, lifting the seven-year ban on the introduction of new biotech products. As of April 18, 2004, all products containing an ingredient that contains more than 0.9 per cent of GMOs must be labelled. Animal feed containing GMOs will also have to be labelled.?One way to protect ourselves here in the US is to grow our own organic foods. When you must purchase foods buy organic or look for foods?labeled?Non-GMO project verified. Keep in mind that all livestock has been exposed to this engineered food so this effects, beef, chicken, pork, eggs, milk, corn, and all products carrying these ingredients. ?In the mid to late 90?s when I became aware that we were being exposed to GMO foods, I made the decision to go 100% organic. In spite of this effort I know there were many times that I or my family members were exposed to GMO foods and that was anytime we weren?t eating at home. ?Though I?m grateful that I was able to make the decision to purchase organic foods, some people can not afford to make the same choice. ?It?s frustrating to know that our tax resources have gone to subsidize the growth of the crops with?chemicals?and GMO foods. While organic food?farmers who grow foods without harmful chemicals?are charged?absorbent?fees, which they in turn to pass on to us. ?Plus, they are not privy to the same ?insurance and marketing that GMO food farmers have. Even conventional?farmers are adversely effected, now having to pay?royalties?on these newly engineered seeds or risk being sued.

What about the manufacturers who use GMOs in their food products? Kraft, General Mills, Kellogg, Coke, Pepsi, Heinz?and Walmart?meet the demands of their consumers in other countries by using non-GMO foods in the products that they distribute outside of the US. Ironically these same companies have jumped on the ?organic? money train by offering organic products or purchasing long-standing organic brands. (We?ll question the integrity of these organic products in another post.) If these companies can make these non-GMO food exceptions for other countries, certainly they can distribute these?affordable?products here in the US, giving us the ability to choose as consumers. Of course, costs become an issue when GMO has become the industry standard, but is possible as a corporation thrive in a non-GMO environment.?Take the Pro-Terra Foundation for example, who announced that since 1996 it has distributed 4.8 million tonnes per year of traceable and verified socially responsible, environmentally stable, non-GM soy and in a bid to encourage more food manufacturers to switch to non-GM soy, cereals and grains, plus they?ve introduced a new not-for-profit organisation consumer orientated logo which has been set up around the established ProTerra standard.
You have to also wonder about the impact that being exposed to these high toxicity levels has had?on our healthcare dollars, not just us?individually?but also a country. ?The US spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world, 16% of our gross domestic product or (GDP) goes to managing?disease. This not only affects us individually?but it affects our country?s competitiveness in the global marketplace.
We?ve been exposed to genetically modified foods for the past 16 years, this is enough time to learn of ?it?s harmful effects. Most recently there
have been studies which show an increase in non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma, childhood leukemia,?breast cancer,?while also causing cardiovascular, nerve, respiratory, kidney, liver,?and?gastrointestinal?damage. As well as?reproductive damage resulting in?infertility, sterility, birth defects, infant mortality relating to the consumption of GMO Soy and the?ingredient?glyphosate. The remains of a couple of nearly 20,000-year-old huts, excavated in a Jordanian desert basin, add to evidence that hunter-gatherers built long-term dwellings 10,000 years before farming villages debuted in the Middle East.
These new discoveries come from a time of social transition, when mobile hunter-gatherers hunkered down for months at a time in spots that featured rivers, lakes and plentiful game, say archaeologist Lisa Maher of the University of California, Berkeley and her colleagues. Discoveries in and around hut remnants at a Stone Age site called Kharaneh IV include hearths, animal bones and caches of pierced seashells and other apparently ritual items, Maher?s team reports in a paper published online February 15 in PLoS ONE.
Graves containing human skeletons were previously excavated beneath what have now been identified as hut floors covered by burned wood and shrubs that once served as walls.
Maher expects evidence of additional four- to five-person huts will turn up at the site, which is about the size of four U.S. football fields. Over a 1,000-year span, groups totaling between 50 and 100 people spent about half of each year at Kharaneh IV, she estimates.
?This type of attachment to one place by ancient hunter-gatherers may have been similar to early farmers? perceptions of their villages,? Maher says.
Ancient huts at Kharaneh IV join a handful of other Stone Age hunter-gatherer structures excavated in the Middle East. Remains of six brushwood huts at Israel?s Ohalo II site, along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, date to as early as 23,000 years ago.
The ancient huts at Ohalo II were probably occupied year-round, based on extensive plant and animal finds at that site, says Harvard University archaeologist Ofer Bar-Yosef. In his view, those huts ? but not the Kharaneh IV huts ? were precursors of 14,500-year-old oval structures with stone foundations built at several Middle Eastern locations by the Natufians, the first foraging society known to inhabit permanent settlements (SN: 9/25/10, p. 14).
New Kharaneh IV finds show that, by 20,000 years ago, ?perishable brush huts were common from the lush Sea of Galilee basin into now-arid plains to the east,? says archaeologist Dani Nadel of the University of Haifa in Israel, who directs Ohalo II excavations.
Ancient hunter-gatherers may not have lived at Kharaneh IV permanently, but they returned annually for long stretches over many generations, Maher says. Gazelle hunting was a prime draw, along with opportunities for trading goods, forming alliances and arranging marriages, she suggests.

Attendees of all ages, religious beliefs and walks of life, gathered to celebrate superstar singer Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a native of Newark, New Jersey. The state?s governor, Chris Christie, flew flags across New Jersey at half mast in her honor.
The 48-year-old music icon died on February 11, a day before the Grammy Awards, in Los Angeles. She is expected to be buried on Sunday. (The official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.)
Despite the singer?s well-documented struggles with substance abuse, on Saturday, there was very little talk of controversy during the largely upbeat, often humorous and emotional Home-Going ceremony held at New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston first sang in the choir as a child. It was attended by more than 1,500 mourners, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack and Whitney?s longtime friends, the Winans family.
The ceremony largely underscored her deep Baptist roots and love of the gospel, whether through word or song. This was evidenced by a performance by Grammy-winning gospel star Donnie McClurkin, who sang one of Houston?s favorites, ?Stand,? at the request of her family.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who spoke early in the service, said that in conversations with Houston he learned that it was her faith in God that carried her through the darkest times of her life. ?Say whatever you want,? Perry said. ?God is for her. She is resting with the angels.?
Gospel singer BeBe Winans, who caused ripples of laughter as he talked about the ?crazy Whitney? he knew, wept as he sang the touching ballad ?I Really Miss You,? a song he wrote about his deceased brother who also died at the age of 48.
Bishop T.D. Jakes and gospel star Kim Burrell also remembered the fallen diva, with Burrell personalizing the Sam Cooke classic, ?A Change Is Gonna Come.? The legendary Stevie Wonder did something similar later, changing the lyrics of one of his most famous songs from ?There?s a ribbon in the sky for our love? to ?There?s an angel in the choir of love.?
Actor Kevin Costner, who fought to have Houston cast opposite him in the groundbreaking 1992 film ?The Bodyguard,? spoke of Houston?s enduring doubts about herself and her talent, even at the height of her musical career. He urged her to ?go sing for your heavenly father, Whitney,? as he fought back tears.
There were a few anxious moments during the ceremony, however, involving Houston?s ex-husband Bobby Brown. He apparently attempted to bring nine people to sit in the front row at the ceremony and was turned away. A source at the funeral told MTV News that Brown was encouraged not to cause a scene at the funeral by walking out, but the singer reportedly got on his tour bus and took off, saying he loved Whitney but felt disrespected by the church. He reiterated the sentiment in a statement released by his rep.
Houston?s mentor, Clive Davis, brought the audience back to the reason they?d all gathered in that church.
?You wait for a voice like that for a lifetime,? he said. ?A face like that. A smile like that. A presence like that for a lifetime. And when one person embodies it all ? well, it takes my breath away.?
He called Houston an eternally loyal friend. ?Yes, she admitted to the craziness in her life, and confessed to Oprah about her battles but when I needed her, she was there,? he said.
To her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Davis said, ?Always be proud of your mother,? before concluding that Whitney was going to ?raise the roof in heaven like no one else has done before.?
Her longtime bodyguard, Ray, who found her body in a Beverly Hills hotel room, wanted people to remember Houston the woman and not just the singer, adding that entertainers in general should be treated with more respect. He was referring to Houston?s tarnished image in the media after years of battling addiction. ?We have to give back to all our entertainers. Treat them with love and stop ridiculing them,? he said. ?They give their lives to you. They?re not with their families. This lady right here, she loved you. I know that. I was with her every day.?
Controversial R&B singer R. Kelly sang a song he wrote for Houston, ?I Look to You,? moments before one of the ceremony?s final performances, ?Tomorrow,? by the Winans family. It was followed by the eulogy given by Marvin Winans.
The church played Houston?s chart-shattering hit ?I Will Always Love You,? the song that was without a doubt her most famous, as pall bearers carried her gleaming silver casket out of the church.

There are many reasons to be cynical as a film fan when the circus of awards season rolls into town. And the best film never, ever wins Best Picture: it probably won't even get nominated. But in the midst of all this bitterness and vitriol, it is easy to lose sight of the occasional cause for genuine joy which gets released in the run-up to the Oscars. The fact that The Artist has now swept the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, and looks certain to win big at the Oscars, should not prejudice or tarnish its status as a very fine film. The awards campaign may have inflated its status, at least artistically, but there is still much to enjoy without feeling any guilt about towing the industry line. Apart from its copious nominations, there are several reasons to be sceptical about The Artist. The involvement of Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the king-makers of awards season, recalls all the Oscar-bait banter that swirled around The King's Speech this time last year. This isn't helped by the backlash against the film led by Kim Novak: in an advert in Variety, she accused its composer of "rape" for sampling Bernard Herrmann's score for Vertigo. Finally, there are accusations that the film is a gimmick, which has tricked BAFTA and Academy members, and which in five years' time will be all but forgotten. But whatever one's feelings about the Weinsteins, or Kim Novak, the point which most needs challenging is the final argument. The stories about people demanding refunds because they didn't know The Artist was a silent film says more about the way the film was marketed that the film itself (the intelligence of said punters is still up for debate). There is nothing about the content or style of The Artist to suggest that the filmmakers are cashing in on recent trends, or that silence is being perceived as the new 3D. Like many films about filmmaking, The Artist is the product of someone with deep-rooted affection for cinema. Michel Hazanavicius chose to tell the story as a silent film because that seemed the most fitting and sensible way to do it. By replicating the dramatic and visual styles of 1920s Hollywood, he situates us in the period more evocatively than any film since Tim Burton's Ed Wood. If you were feeling especially harsh, you could quickly deconstruct the plot of The Artist into a muddle of different melodramas along a similar theme. From this viewpoint, it is essentially a romantic version of All About Eve, or A Star is Born with the genders reversed: a young actor rises at the expense of an established star, against the backdrop of some kind of technical sea-change. The film also bears resemblance to Singing in the Rain, in showing silent actors attempting to survive around the first talkies, and The Jazz Singer in the various technical changes which come with the advent of sound. There are also subtle hints to darker works, in particular Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?: both the attempted suicide and the discovery of the auctioned possessions have a distinctly creepy tone, bringing back rich memories of Joan Crawford duelling with Bette Davis. Although widely referred to as a silent film, The Artist does utilise sound on two occasions. There is the final scene where the two stars perform a dance number and John Goodman's director expresses his approval. But far more effective is the nightmare sequence, where everything and everyone except Valentin can make a noise. This Lynchian sequence takes innocuous, everyday sounds, like a phone ringing, girls laughing or a dog barking, and turns them into weapons against the main character. The scene of the feather landing on the ground and producing a huge sound is as weird and unnerving as anything in Eraserhead. Like many of the films from which it borrows, The Artist is about how Hollywood has mistreated, and continues to mistreat, its stars. We have an image of the Golden Era of Hollywood as one where the stars had all the power, when in fact the studios were still firmly pulling the strings of both actors and directors. The film reminds us that the movie business has always been just that: actors are only worth something when they are in fashion. With the endless supply of young talent drawn to the glamour of Hollywood, it is easy to replace the old guard when fashions change. The message of The Artist is that different generations or movements in an art form can coexist, and it is important in celebrating contemporary filmmaking to remember where cinema came from. The commercial success of The Artist on top of all its awards proves that it is possible to have black-and-white in an age of colour, 2D in an supposed age of 3D, and silent in a world of sound. It is a both a soft-hearted tribute to the past and a call to arms to prevent further homogenisation in modern cinema. The biggest success of The Artist is that you are able to enjoy and appreciate it without feeling like you are being lectured, either about the history of cinema or your duty to uphold it for future generations. Within 20 minutes the fact that it is silent will have escaped you - you will be so drawn in by the story, and find the tone so warm and accessible, that it will seem like any other film. It is demonstrable proof, like Inception, that art and entertainment are not competing entities, and that the public will pay in their droves to see intelligent filmmaking regardless of what form it takes. The Artist is a film which genuinely has something for everyone. It quite literally lives up to Geoffrey Rush's line in Shakespeare in Love about audiences wanting "comedy, love and a bit with a dog". The film has a wry sense of humour, using the music and inter-titles to good deadpan effect. The love story, while familiar and melodramatic, is believable from the outset. The pathos is genuine, particularly the scene of the down-and-out Valentin looking at his reflection in a shop window. And the dog, played by Uggie, is very good. The human performances in The Artist are all of a high standard. Both Jean Dujardin and B?r?nice Bejo are charismatic and convincing; they clearly understand the acting styles of melodrama and silent cinema, and so we are spared anything which is self-consciously over-the-top. John Goodman is very good as the cigar-chewing director, and James Cromwell looks the part at Valentin's butler. Special mention should go to the cameo performances of Missi Pyle and Malcolm McDowell: neither is on screen for very long, but both are brilliant physical actors whose slightest move tells you everything you need to know. The Artist is not a perfect film, or the masterpiece that many have made it out to be. The third act drags a little bit, the music is repetitive, and the familiar nature of both its story and characters will leave some feeling they have seen it all before. But it remains a joyous and highly entertaining watch which should not be frowned upon if it wins Best Picture. Like The Jazz Singer before it, future generations may remember it more as an industrial point than for its own merits. All this generation can do is embrace it and enjoy it, and we should feel no guilt for doing so.

French navy helped attacked ship off Nigeria (AP)
LAGOS, Nigeria ? An anti-piracy watchdog says the French navy, rather than Nigerian authorities, had to help a cargo ship attacked by pirates that saw two crew members killed.
The International Maritime Bureau said on their website Thursday that the French aided the cargo ship after the attack early Monday. The bureau said eight pirates took a cook hostage and forced him to the captain's room, where they shot and killed him while stealing a safe.
The bureau said the chief engineer died from injuries he suffered when falling down a makeshift rope of bed sheets to escape.
The attacks are just the latest to target West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, where piracy has escalated from low-level armed robberies to hijackings and cargo thefts.

Valentine?s Day is right around the corner, and love is certainly in the air for celebrities. Over winter vacation, it seemed as though there was a new engagement announcement every day in Hollywood. Some couplings surprise us, while others relieved us as we were waiting for them to happen. While some breakups like Heidi and Seal and Katy and Russell seemed to put a damper on the lovey dovey feelings, the positive energy from these newly engaged couples showed us that there still is real love in the crazy world of celebs. Let?s take a look at the top three hottest winter engagements.?
After five years of dating and two kids later, actor Matthew McConaughey proposed to longtime love, Brazilian beauty Camila Alves. Fans were always wondering whether or not The Lincoln Lawyer star would ever propose to his girlfriend, and they certainly were pleasantly surprised when McConaughey popped the question on Christmas day. These two are a match made in heaven as Camila is the only woman who can put up with Matty?s choice to not wear deodorant. A sexy but coy couple, these two never flaunt for the paparazzi, give revealing interviews, or go PDA crazy. ?They are also one of the few couples with a steady history unmarred by multiple breakups and scandals. Going along with the couples? style, I assume that they will have a low key wedding in the near future, and not some star studded Kim Kardashian style bash. Second, J.T. and Jess have already broken up once, which is never a good sign. ?All of the engagement rumors have been confirmed, yet no one has been able to capture a photo of the rock that should be on her fourth finger. Whenever Jess is walking, she keeps her left hand in her pocket, and chose to not wear her engagement ring to the Golden Globes. In this case, I am suspicious of these two, and that is never a good sign for a newly engaged couple.
After a raucous set of years dating a variety of people, actress Drew Barrymore seems to have found love again with art consultant and son of former Chanel CEO, Will Kopelman. It may be that the sixth time does the trick in this case, as Barrymore has been engaged three times and had two serious relationships in the past. Until the two announced their engagement, many people were unaware that Barrymore and Kopelman were even dating. After her highly publicized relationship with younger actor Justin Long, everyone was rooting for Team Justin, and was surprised when she became engaged to someone else. Now, whenever Barrymore gives an interview, all she does is gush over her new fianc? and talk about how she can?t stop staring at her engagement ring. This pair seems to be off to a good start, but given Barrymore?s turbulent romantic history, their future is unpredictable.?
Among the more than 15 hot engagements this winter, these three stood out to us. Some were waiting to happen, while others surprised and confused us. Most of the engagements that occurred over winter vacation involved people with rollercoaster like love lives, which makes us wonder if these couplings represent new beginnings, or are they simply travelling down the same ill fated paths again?
