How Does the Fellowship Program Work?

But that biological perk may be limited to mammals that evolved for endurance exercise?like us. So says a study in the Journal of Experimental Biology. [David A. Raichlen et al, Wired to run: exercise-induced endocannabinoid signaling in humans and cursorial mammals with implications for the ?runner?s high?]

Researchers had humans and dogs?both natural-born runners?jog a half hour on a treadmill. Then they sampled their blood for endocannabinoids, some of the compounds thought to trigger the runner's high. As expected, humans and dogs had much higher levels after the run. But when ferrets?a sedentary species?took the same 30-minute trot, they had no spike in those feel-good molecules.

The authors say that's because long-distance running could have helped our hunter-gatherer ancestors find more food?thus increasing their reproductive success. And they speculate that natural selection may have linked up a feel-good reward to that beneficial behavior. These days of course, this ancient trait won't help us find extra calories?but it may encourage us to run 'em off.

DUBLIN (AP) ? Former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern announced Sunday he has resigned from the Fianna Fail party rather than be expelled over an investigation into secret payments he received while in office, but vowed to clear his name.

Ahern, 60, denounced the findings of a 15-year investigation organized by Ahern's own government into bribery and corruption in Irish political life.

The three judges overseeing the fact-finding effort issued a final report Thursday that found Ahern collected more than ?200,000 ($260,000) in secret while in office; tried to stop the public learning the truth about the money squirreled away in two safes and third-party bank accounts; and provided unbelievable explanations for how he accrued the cash in three currencies.

"I believe a grave injustice has been done to me," Ahern said in a statement to the Sunday Independent newspaper.

"It would be far easier for me to say nothing and try to forget about this nightmare. But I can't allow this blemish on my character to go unanswered," said Ahern, who declined to specify what legal or other action he planned to take.

Ahern, who was Fianna Fail leader from 1994 to 2008 and Ireland's prime minister from 1997 to 2008, said he was "deeply saddened" to face an expulsion motion and would resign instead.

"The last thing I want to do, given that I have now retired as a public representative, is to be a source of political division in the party I care so deeply about," said Ahern, who represented central Dublin in Dail Eireann, Ireland's parliament, from 1977 to 2011.

But Fianna Fail's justice spokesman, Dara Calleary, said the party's executive had yet to receive Ahern's resignation letter and still planned to vote to expel him at a meeting this Friday in punishment for Ahern's unacceptable money-collecting record.

During 15 days of testimony in 2007 and 2008, Ahern was repeatedly caught misleading the judges about the extent of his hidden money, as well as an ill-documented agreement that allowed him to live in a home technically owned by a benefactor.

Ahern eventually was forced to admit collecting hundreds of thousands in cash that he kept in two safes in his office and home in the early 1990s when he was Ireland's finance minister, then eventually transferring those and other undocumented cash into more than a dozen accounts in the names of his children and then-partner, Celia Larkin.

Ahern kept no Irish bank account during much of the period under investigation, and testified that he always cashed paychecks in pubs rather than deposit them normally. He branded some unearthed cash payments from businessmen as gifts and loans from friends, then admitted he didn't know some of their names, and no loan agreements existed. He repaid about ?90,000 ($125,000).

The judges said they couldn't determine whether Ahern was corrupt, because they could find no proof that he gave any his donors particular favors as a condition of their payment.

Sunday Independent columnist Brendan O'Connor, in a column accompanying Ahern's statement, wrote that the judges "couldn't find Ahern guilty of anything but lying, precisely because he lied. Because he wouldn't tell it the truth about where the money came from, it was unable to determine the source of funds."

He said much of the investigation's work, at an estimated cost to taxpayers of ?250 million ($325 million), was "misguided and wasteful."

BEIRUT (AP) ? As Syria's bloodshed deepens, the British-born first lady has become an object of contempt for many, a Marie Antoinette figure who shopped online for crystal-encrusted Christian Louboutin stilettos while her country burned.

The European Union slapped sanctions Friday on Asma Assad, the 36-year-old wife of the president who for the past decade offered a veneer of respectability to one of the world's most opaque and ruthless dictatorships.

The Syrian government's ferocious crackdown on a year-old uprising has shattered the image of her as a glamorous, reform-minded woman who could help bring progressive values to a country that has been ruled by the Assad family dynasty for more than 40 years.

The European action ? the latest punishment imposed by world leaders on Syria for its crackdown ? bans her from traveling to EU countries and freezing any assets she may have there.

"She is one of the regime's deceptions," said Amer Mattar, a 26-year-old Syrian who recently fled the country because of the violence that has killed 8,000 people in the past year. "She is definitely part of this ugly formula in Syria."

A trove of emails ? purported to be from the private accounts of Bashar and Asma Assad and published last month by London's Guardian newspaper ? have helped unmask that deception. They appear to capture the first lady splurging on luxury goods as violence sweeps her country, placing orders for expensive jewelry, bespoke furniture, and a 2,650-pound ($4,200) vase from Harrods department store in London.

Born Asma Akhras to a prominent Syrian family living in the U.K., the future first lady grew up in the west London suburbs, a generally affluent, quiet part of the city with comfortable houses, tree-lined streets and large parks.

In a haunting twist, her family is originally from Homs, a city in central Syria that regime forces have besieged with tanks, snipers and relentless shelling to crush the resistance there. The bloodied city is now a symbol of the uprising.

Known among childhood friends as "Emma," Asma studied at King's College London, graduating in 1996 with a degree in computer science and a diploma in French literature. She was working at JP Morgan in London when she met Bashar Assad, who was then the son of the Syrian president, reportedly during a family vacation to the country.

Despite their divergent upbringings, the two could trade stories about life in London. Bashar had studied ophthalmology in London before returning to Syria to prepare for a life in politics. He was groomed for the presidency after his older brother, Basil, widely regarded as his father's chosen heir, died in a 1994 car crash.

The couple married in 2000 ? the same year Bashar inherited power from his father ? and Asma quickly became a glamorous face of the new regime. With her honey-colored hair and designer clothes, Asma provided a charming counterpoint to Bashar's gawky, somewhat awkward demeanor.

She was outspoken about humanitarian issues, a fact that many Syrian now point to as a sign of deep hypocrisy. In 2009, she decried an Israeli siege in Gaza as "barbaric," telling CNN that the world was "working against the clock" to save lives there.

"This is the 21st century," she said in the interview. "Where in the world could this happen? ... As a mother and as a human being, we need to make sure that these atrocities stop."

Before the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, the Assads often were spotted driving around town, even photographed in Damascus riding bicycles with their three children: Hafez, who is 10; Zein, 8, and Kareem, 7. They live in an apartment in the upscale Abu Rummaneh district of Damascus, as opposed to a palatial mansion like other Arab leaders.

In the years after her husband ascended to the presidency, Asma played a key role in shoring up the image of the regime, gathering fawning headlines from feature writers and fluffy profiles in fashion magazines.

"Du chic, du chic et encore du chic," gushed France's Elle magazine in 2008, which went on to name her the world's most stylish woman. In 2009, Britain's top-selling tabloid The Sun introduced its readers to the "sexy Brit" who was "bringing Syria in from the cold."

One profile in particular, a deluxe spread in Vogue magazine, has come back to haunt her. Published only a month before the start of Syria's crackdown, the article rehashed the main staples of the Asma legend: Her "killer IQ"; her charity work; and the notion that, like Disney's Princess Jasmine, Asma liked to slip out into the country incognito to meet her people.

But the article ? which has since been pulled from Vogue's website ? has been ridiculed as sinister in retrospect.

The Assad household, the article says, is run on "wildly democratic principles" and is equipped with a blackboard which tracks when anyone raises their voice. In the article, Bashar explains why he studied ophthalmology as his chosen field of medicine. The reason, he says, is "there is very little blood."

Asma has been mostly out of sight in the year since her husband's regime came under fire. Although she has been largely silent, she appears to be standing by her man.

She showed up briefly at a pro-regime rally in January, smiling with her children as her husband said the "conspiracy" against Syria was in its final stage. On Feb. 26, dressed in a conservative black dress, she accompanied her husband to a polling station during a referendum on a new constitution..

In one of the emails obtained by the Guardian, she describes herself as "the real dictator" in the family, a tacit acknowledgment that her husband is seen in the wider world as a despot leading a suffocating regime.

The emails portray Asma as an enthusiastic online shopper. The woman's identity is not known, but the paper said it wasn't his wife.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? Large quantities of antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter the environment via municipal -- and especially hospital -- wastewater streams. Although wastewater treatment plants reduce the total number of bacteria, the most hazardous -- multiresistant -- strains appear to withstand or even to be promoted by treatment processes. This was demonstrated by Eawag researchers in a study carried out in Lake Geneva, near Lausanne.

Treated wastewater from the city of Lausanne -- around 90,000 m³ per day -- is released into Vidy Bay (Lake Geneva); the discharge point is located 700 m offshore, at a depth of 30 m. The Lausanne region does not have a pharmaceutical industry or intensive animal production. However, the Lausanne treatment plant receives wastewater not only from the region's 214,000 inhabitants and a number of smaller healthcare centres, but also from a major healthcare facility -- the University Hospital of Canton Vaud (CHUV). As studies from the hospital and veterinary medicine sectors have indicated an increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance, a group of researchers have now investigated whether resistance genes also enter the environment -- specifically, Lake Geneva -- via wastewater treatment plants[i]. Resistance testing was performed using both traditional culture methods and elaborate genetic analysis.

In the first sampling programme ever conducted on this scale in Switzerland, data were obtained for municipal wastewater, lake water and lake sediments. Some of the findings were in line with expectations, e.g. particularly high levels of highly multiresistant bacteria in wastewater at the CHUV. But the study also produced surprising results: while, overall, more than 75% of bacteria are eliminated at the treatment plant, the proportion of especially resistant strains is increased in treated wastewater. According to microbiologist Helmut B?rgmann, the treatment plant is likely to serve as a hot spot for the exchange of antibiotic resistance genes. Here, bacteria which otherwise inhabit the human body encounter others already adapted to the environment, and mobile genetic elements can be readily transferred as a result of the high bacterial cell densities. B?rgmann comments: "The uptake of resistance genes by bacteria is not unusual and doesn't in itself pose a hazard; what wasn't previously known was that levels of multiresistance genes are elevated in the lake, and particularly also in the sediment, close to the wastewater discharge outlet." This, he believes, increases the risk that, at some point, resistance genes will also be transferred to pathogens. That could occur in the lake itself, or in the human body, if mobile genetic elements for antibiotic resistance find their way into drinking water.

Nadine Czekalski, who carried out most of the investigations as part of her dissertation, sees "no grounds for panic." A drinking water pump is situated 3 km from the point where wastewater is discharged into the lake. The researchers detected multiresistance genes in sediment samples collected close to the pump, but not in lake water at this site. In addition, water taken from the lake is treated before being fed into Lausanne's water supply system. But Czekalski and B?rgmann agree that there is a need for caution. After all, approx. 15% of Switzerland's wastewater is discharged, after treatment, directly into lakes. Vidy Bay can be regarded as a typical model of this situation. Accordingly, in the researchers' view, the federal government's plans to introduce an additional process for the removal of micropollutants at selected treatment plants is a step in the right direction: the advanced treatment process largely inactivates not only micropollutants, but also resistant microorganisms. However, as hospital wastewater contains the highest load of multiresistant bacteria, the researchers also recommend that it should undergo separate treatment.

About Multiresistance

Microbiologists use the term "multiresistant" to describe bacteria which have acquired resistance to multiple antibiotics. These bacteria are frequently also resistant to other substances, such as heavy metals or disinfectants. Environmental releases of bacteria incorporating resistance genes are considered to be a matter of concern. In the long term, the prevalence and variety of these genes in the environment is increased, which in turn increases the risk that they will also be transferred to pathogens at some point.

Cellphone-maker Nokia now owns a patent for a tattoo capable of stimulating someone when they receive a call or text, reports Tech News World. It?s not yet known if Nokia is actively working on developing this technology, but the patent proves that corporations are looking to create more than the next faster, aesthetically pleasing device.

Such a "tattoo" would be more of a skin graft. Its material would be ?capable of detecting a magnetic field and transferring a perceivable stimulus to the skin,? according to TNW. The question is: Are people willing to permanently attach themselves to their phones, even if it makes communication more convenient?

It might not be as far from reality as you might think. Microchips carrying a person?s medical information ? not as visible as tattoos, but similar in function ? were approved by the FDA in 2004. Advocates applauded the chip for its ability to quickly deliver records to hospitals and doctors, making it easier to deliver treatment in the case of an emergency.

Critics worried about identity theft and privacy infringement, both legitimate concerns considering the chip?s persistence and accessibility. Regardless, such a chip demonstrates the importance and commercial value of a tool that increases the efficiency of person-to-person communication.

In the case of Nokia?s potential tattoo, communication would be unavoidable, unless Nokia develops ?on? and ?off? features. But because near-instant notification of communication already exists (headsets, cell phone alerts, even Facebook), this tattoo technology isn?t a demand as much as it is a novelty.

When companies merge practicality and novelty, as Apple did with the iPhone, audiences often follow. For now, a vibrating tattoo only seems practical for replicants in ?Blade Runner.? But when the world starts to look more like a science fiction movie, Nokia might have a leg up on the competition.

The idea revolves around the use of multiple defenses to thwart, or at least limit, the damage arising from a potential security breach. Network firewall The first line of defense against unwelcomed visitors would surely be the firewall. At one point, the use of dual firewalls from different vendors was all the rage, though the creation of a DMZ (Demilitarized zone) appears to be more popular these days. Internet-facing servers are typically placed within the DMZ, where they are encumbered by fewer restrictions and lesser monitoring than the internal corporate network. LONDON (Reuters) - In turning one of its best-known hackers into an informant and breaking open the highest profile elements of the "Anonymous" movement, authorities have dealt a serious blow to a group they found a growing irritant.

But as the broader "Anonymous" label - complete with its iconic Guy Fawkes mask imagery - is used by ever more disparate causes worldwide, it may be all but impossible to shut it down for good.

U.S. authorities revealed on Wednesday that leading Anonymous hacker "Sabu" - real name Hector Xavier Monsegur, aged 28 - had been arrested last June in his apartment in a Manhattan housing complex.

According to a newly released court transcript, he agreed to cooperate with authorities in return for likely leniency - helping U.S. prosecutors bring charges against five more men, including two in Britain and two in Ireland. All had also been previously arrested.

"Sabu was seen as a leader," said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finnish security firm f-secure. "Just yesterday people were looking up to him... it's a very serious blow. It's probably not going to be the end of Anonymous but it's going to take a while for them to recover, particularly from the paranoia."

All six were said to be senior members of LulzSec, an offshoot of Anonymous that took credit for a range of hacking attacks on government and private sector websites. Targets included the CIA, Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency, Japan's Sony Corp and a host of others including in Ireland and Mexico.

Taking inspiration from the hacking and Internet community as well as popular culture - particularly the 2005 film "V for Vendetta" in which a masked hero fights a dystopian government - Anonymous emerged in the middle of the last decade.

Initially focused on fighting attempts at Internet regulation and blocking free illegal downloads, it has since taken on a range of other targets including Scientology and the global banking system. Governments have been a growing target, both Western and in more autocratic states such as China and Iran. Websites have been attacked and occasionally shut down.

But Anonymous - and LulzSec in particular - leapt to much greater prominence in late 2010 when they launched what they described as the "first cyber war" in retaliation for attempts to shut down the Wikileaks website.

They attacked websites such as MasterCard that tried to block payments to Wikileaks after apparent pressure from the US government following the release of thousands of diplomatic cables.

"NO HONOUR AMONG THIEVES"?

"This is probably the end of this particular group," said Tim Hardy, a British activist and computer scientist who runs the blog "Beyond Clicktivism. " But... part of the point of Anonymous is that it's a group that anyone can say they are part of, whether they are attacking a website or wearing a mask outside the Church of Scientology."

Those masks became an increasingly frequent sight on Western streets in 2011, increasingly adopted by more radical, libertarian and sometimes anarchist elements of European and U.S. protest groups.

They became a frequent sight at demonstrations such as "Occupy Wall Street" and its spin-offs elsewhere in the U.S. and Britain. They were also heavily used by the "indignados" anti-austerity protesters in Spain, where fancy dress shops ran out of stock and had to import them from abroad.

Such popular usage will likely continue, but the loss of some of the movement's highest profile stars and technical experts will still hurt.

Web forums frequented by Anonymous were frothing with abuse and anger following the arrests on Tuesday. "Sabu" had been occasionally suspected of being a mole, but had continued to operate as an effective leader advising other hackers on the importance of maintaining anonymity and security.

"No honor among thieves," said Tony Dyhouse, a computer security expert at UK defense firm QinetiQ who has long studied hackers. "Any further (Anonymous) actions are likely to be much more low-key. Fear is in the ranks. However, there will be many that see some of the casualties as martyrs and empty footprints to be filled."

Computer security experts say the hackers of LulzSec appeared much more technically adept than had been usual for Anonymous, which has often relied on simple - if illegal - software that can be downloaded by any potential hacker regardless of their technical skills.

"FEATHER IN CAP FOR FEDS"

While many of its attacks - often direct denial of service (DDOS) attacks designed to overload websites - were relatively simple, LulzSec penetrated secure commercial systems to steal highly sensitive information.

These included credit card details of users of Sony's latest PlayStation platform as well as client details and some 5 million e-mails from U.S. specialist geopolitical publisher and sometime private intelligence firm Stratfor. The Stratfor e-mails were then passed on to Wikileaks, which is now publishing them.

U.S. authorities said one of those arrested this week, Jeremy Hammond - a Chicago resident who styled himself "Anarchaos" - had been charged with the Stratfor hack. Another of those arrested, 19-year-old Donncha O' Cearrbhail, was charged with another recent high profile success - the hacking of a conference call between the FBI and London detectives discussing action against hackers.

"Undoubtedly this is a big feather in the cap for the Feds," said QinetiQ's Dyhouse. "But the Scotland Yard/FBI leak shows how simple mistakes can have a huge impact on any operation. Interceptions can be so easy these days."

Ultimately, Anonymous and LulzSec in particular may have been the victims of their own success and over ambition. Whatever the technical mistakes and personal weaknesses that led to their undoing, security experts say their fate was sealed once they became so high profile that authorities made them a priority.

The success of Anonymous in the last two years may also have itself driven greater emphasis on computer security and fuelled demands for regulation - the opposite of their intent.

Even for a global activist community infused with new energy and political significance in the aftermath of the financial crisis, Anonymous remains controversial and divisive.

While some members may be admired for their actions and beliefs - albeit often varied and extreme - others are seen as simply in it for the "lulz", the plural of the Internet abbreviation LOL for "laugh out loud".

"There are those who see them as banner carriers for the revolutionary left," says Beyond Clicktivism's Hardy. "But there are also those who see them just as consumerists who don't want to pay (for)... music and videos."
